Isaac sat on the couch in front of the window for what seemed like the millionth time that day. He was watching her again. She was so mysterious. Not really, he admitted to himself. She lived in a normal house in a normal community. She looked like a normal girl, with a nice look, but there was something that stuck him about her. She looked very young. Almost too young to live by herself.
It had been two days since he had first seen her moving the big boxes out of the trailer attatched to her truck. Today all she had done was mown her lawn, pick a few weeks in the driveway, and stick new numbers on her mailbox. Now she was picking weeds in the flower bed by the steps that led to the front porch.
He sighed. She looked really pretty, but he wanted to get a closer look before he decided it was time to risk getting embarassed.
"Are you gooning again?" Diana asked, walking by.
"No." He said, shifting his position on the couch.
"I think you are." She said, sitting down next to him.
"Nah." He insisted.
"She's such a nice girl, you should go talk." Diana said.
"Yeah...Hey, wait a minute. How would you know?" Isaac asked.
"I met her this morning before you came over." Diana said. Isaac lived only four blocks away in a duplex.
"You did?!?" He exclaimed.
"Mmmhmm." Diana said with a smile, watching the girl rip up the overgrown weeds.
"Well?"
"Well what?'
"Well what's she like? Give me the lowdown mom." Isaac prodded.
"You're such weirdo." She said. "Well, her name is Wendy Harris, and she's Betty's grandchild." Diana began.
"Oh."
"Betty gave the house to her while she went to a nursing home in Florida." She said. "Wendy is nineteen and just moved here from Georgia, and she talks like this." Diana said, demonstrating a southern drawl.
"Really?"
"Mmmmhmm...Oh Isaac, you should meet her, she's just the cutest thing." Diana said. "Prettiest green eyes." She added, patting her son on the knee.
"So why did she move here?"
"I'm not sure...maybe you should ask her."
"Mom..."Isaac pleaded, looking out the window.
"Okay, alright, but i'm going to go for a walk after dinner, if you're interested."
"Yeah, okay, sure." Isaac said sarcastically. He snorted to himself. How stupid would he look, strolling around with his mother on a summer evening? A Friday night even! No, he wouldn't be doing that anytime soon. He had his pride, after all.
"Mom, are you ready to go?" Isaac shouted down the hall. It was six-thirty, and his mother was taking forever to get her shoes on.
"I'm coming already!" She said with grin.
"What are you smirking at now?" He asked.
"You." She said, patting him on the back. "Whatever mom, I've got better things to do than to go on walks....sure." She said, mocking her son. He glared at her, and she laughed.
"You look so handsome when you give me that dirty look." She said, tying her cardigan around her waist.
Isaac just rolled his eyes and opened the door.
"Now be polite." She said. "No rude questions."
"Mom."
"What?"
She looked up and saw Wendy in her yard, still yanking away at the weeds. She looked up. Isaac felt his stomach fall to his shoes. She was the cutest thing he had ever seen.
"Well hi there." She said, standing up. Isaac nearly choked. Her voice was sweet, with just a touch of a southern drawl. She had sandy blonde hair that fell just below her shoulders, and bright green eyes. She wore dirty jeans cut off to made shorts, with sandals and a dingy white tank top. She looked as though she had had a fight with her yard and almost lost. Through all the dirt and mud Isaac could see that she was a cute girl with small frame, probabally 5'2 and on the skinny side.
"Hello." Diana said.
"Just wokin on this yard. Isn't it awful?" She asked.
"Well it looks like you've done a pretty good job." Diana said. "I don't think Betty got out much."
"No, i can tell she didn't." Wendy said. She looked at Isaac. "Who's your friend? He ain't got a tongue?"
Isaac was speechless.
"This is my eldest son, Isaac Hanson." Diana said.
"Well pleased to meet you." She said, outreaching her hand.
Isaac shook it, savoring the feeling. She smiled at him, then at his mother. The two women continuted talking for a few minutes, then Diana looked at her watch.
"Oh!" She exclaimed. "We've been standing out here for an hour! There goes my walk." She said. "Ike, we had better get home. I have to do some things."
"Well it sure was nice to talkin' to ya." Wendy said. "Nice meetin' you." she looked at Isaac, smiled, then walked towards her house.
Once home, Isaac flopped back onto the couch.
"Wow." He said.
"I told you she was cute."
"Oh, mom, she wasn't cute, she was beautiful." he said. "her hair, her eyes, her voice." He said, remembering her smile. "I could listen to that voice forever."
"Keep her in mind." Diana said.
"I certainly will." Isaac said.
