The next day at her locker, Katie kept peeking over her shoulder. She was waiting for Zac. It would be the first time in weeks he would come to her locker. SHe felt her stomach flutter with nervousness. Why am I so nervous? She asked herself silently. She always got to school early, so she wasn't expecting Zac for another few minutes.
"Hi Katie."
Katie groaned inside. She knew that voice. "Hi Jeremy." She said, turning to face him. She dropped a folder that was in her hands, and she bent down to pick up it's contents.
"Oh, you dropped this." Jeremy said, handing her a picture.
"Thanks." She said, taking it. Her eyes caught it, and it was one of the pictures from the homecoming dance that she and Zac had gone to.
"Oh...sorry about that." Jeremy said.
"Sorry about what?" She asked.
"Oh...that you had to see that."
"See what?" Katie asked. What was he getting at?
"The picture of you and....and Zac. That must be hard." He said.
"No. Not really." She said. She took one last look at the picture before shoving it on the top shelf of her locker.
"I'm sorry about that." He said, pushing his glasses up his nose.
"Sorry about what? Me and Zac? Don't be." She said.
"Oh...okay..." He said.
"Yeah." She replied, digging in her locker for her english book.
"So did you study for the biology test today?" He asked eagerly. It was best to change the subject as quickly as possible.
How can he be so excited about school? Wait....Biology!?! What biology thing?
"Um, no." She said.
"We have a big test today...Mr. T gave us all weekend to study." Jeremy said in all seriousness."
"Shit....I was busy this weekend, I forgot all about it. What am I gonna do?" She asked aloud.
"You can use my notes." A voice said.
Katie whirled around to see Zac standing with his bookbag slung over one shoulder behind her.
"Hi." She said, caught off guard.
"Hi...so, do you want to see my notes? I don't need them until seventh hour." He said.
"Uh..." Katie looked at him, then down at the floor. She couldn't afford another bad grade in that class. "Sure." She said.
"Okay." He said. He put his bookbag on the floor and dug around in it for a moment before yanking a notebook out. He handed it to her proudly.
"The new ones are in the back." He said.
"Thanks." Katie said. She watched in a daze as he bent over and re-arranged his bookbag.
"So what did you want me to come over here for?" Zac asked, zipping up his bookbag.
Katie's attention snapped back to there and then. "Oh, your swearshirt." She said, turning to her locker.
"My sweatshirt?" Zac asked in confusion.
"Yeah...the one you lent me on Saturday." She said.
"Oh yeah." Zac said. He didn't expect her to give it back so soon.
She dug it out of her bookbag and handed it to him. "Thanks." She said, smiling a bit.
"You're welcome." He said, smiling back at her. Their eyes locked for a moment, then Katie looked away.
"Uh, thanks for reminding about the test today, Jeremy." She said.
"No problem." Jeremy muttered, digging in his locker. Katie looked uncertainly at Zac, not knowing what to say.
"Um, I'd better go." he said.
"I'll walk with you." She said quickly.
"Okay." Zac said. Finally.... he thought.
Right before third hour, Katie was standing at her locker, trying to open it. She felt Jeremy's prescence beside her, and she looked over.
"Hi." She said.
"I didn't know you guys were friends again." He said bluntly.
"Well...yeah." She said. She frowned at him. "Why would it matter?"
"I doesn't." He said quickly, opening his locker.
"Then why did you ask?" She was becoming suspicious very fast.
"I didn't mean anything by it." He said. "I thought you hated him."
"No, that's not true." She said quickly. That was the last thing she needed just then. Another rumor.
"Well you started talking to him awful quickly."
That was the last straw. "Why is it any of your business?" She snapped.
Jeremy looked taken back. She immidiately felt sorry. "Sorry." She mumbled.
"Well i just wondered, because he said some pretty nasty stuff about you." Jeremy said.
"You don't know that." She said.
"Oh." Jeremy said.
Katie didn't understand why he was so interested in the whole situation.
"So when did you two start talking again?" He asked.
"Saturday." She said, still frowning. Jeremy was really beggining to creep her out. "I have to go." She said, and walked away. Suddenly, she wanted to be as far from Jeremy as possible.
