The next day at school, things hadnt' gone any better. People were still coming up to her and asking if it was true. Katie almost couldn't believe her ears. By the time she got home, she was so angry and convinced that Zac had to have started the rumors, she never wanted to speak to him again.

"How could this have happened?" Katie asked Nicole.

"I don't know. It's pretty bad though."

"Don't even tell me." Katie muttered, rolling over on her bed. Nicole was spending the night, and the two girls were busy contemplating the reasons of why Zac might lie. Katie had been pondering for the ast two days, and at night she would think until her head hurt.

"I have to call him." She said, getting up off of her bed.

"Are you sure?" Nicole asked. "That might not be such a good idea."

Katie looked at her friend in bewilderment. "Why do you say that?"

"I dunno." Nicole said, shrugging her shoulders. "You might want to give it a few days, I mean, who knows, by Monday, this whole thing could have blown over."

Katie shook her head and grabbed the phone. "No. I'm going to set him straight." She said. She dialed his number, and he picked up on the first ring.

"Hello?"

"Zac, I want to know what's going on now." She said.

Zac sighed. "Katie, if I knew, I would tell you." He said.

"Zac, you've got to know. I'm miserable. Do you know what people are saying about me?" She asked him.

"Katie..."

"Zac! They're calling me a slut. They're saying that I not only sleep with you, but with at least three other people."

"I'm sorry-"

"You should be! I want to know what you've been telling people." She said.

"I haven't been saying anything, I swear." He said.

"How do I know?"

Zac was shocked that Katie would even question him. He honestly didn't know who had started the rumors, and he could tell that Katie was getting very mad, very fast.

"Zac, my teachers have been looking at me strange. My teachers. Do you know how embarassing this is?"

"No...Katie, you have to believe me."

"Zac I....I don't know if I can." She said.

"I didn't say anything to anyone. I promise."

"Then why are people saying all of stuff?"

"I don't know!" Zac was getting more and more frusterated by the second. Why would she even think it was him in the first place? Was there something going on that he didn't know about?

"Katie, I'm sorry." He said, after only hearing silence on the line.

"Zac-"

"I didn't say it!" He said.

"I....I....I can't talk to you right now." She said. He could tell that she had started to cry.

"Katie, I'm sorry. Let's talk-"

"No." She said quietly.

"I didn't-"

"No." She said again. "I don't want to talk to you...I can't deal with this...I....just..maybe it would be better if we..."

Zac listened as she trailed off. "Are we breaking up?" He said, his voice cracking with emotion.

"I...I....yes." She said.

"I can't believe....Katie-"

"Zac, I have to go."

"No! Wait, just listen I-"

"Zac, please...don't make this any harder..."

She was silent a moment, and Zac could hear her crying.

"I didn't say it, I swear." He whispered.

"Good-bye." She said, and then he heard the line click.
