Zac set down the phone, not believing what had happened. Katie had broken up with...him. They were broken up. She dumped him. They were over. No longer a couple. They weren't together. he had been dumped. He rephrased it as many times as he could in his head, but he still couldn't believe it.
How had this happened? Why had it happened? What did he do to deserve it? How did it all happen so quickly? He lay back on his bed, not realizing that tears were streaming down his face until they were already on his comforter.
He would no longer get to pick her up for school in the mornings, nor would he walker to her locker before first hour. He couldn't kiss her anymore, and he couldn't put his arm around her shoulders, and he wouldn't be able to touch her soft hair. He would have no one to tutor in geometry, and he didn't have anyone to call. He didn't have anyone to hold hands with, or find notes in his locker from. He was alone.
Kaite put the phone down, not believing what had just happened. She had broken up with Zac. They were no longer.
"What happened?" Nicole asked, having a feeling she already knew.
"I...I...We b-broke up." She said.
"Oh my gosh." Nicole whispered. She got up from her position on the floor and sat beside Katie on the bed.
"Why?"
"I don't know." Katie said, her tears spilling over more.
"Oh...don't cry." Nicole said, giving her best friend a hug.
Katie cried for a few minutes, only able to think about how awful things had gotten so quickly.
She pulled away and looked at Nicole. "Was I right? I mean, should I have done that? What if-"
"No, don't do that."
"What?" Katie asked, sniffing.
Nicole got up and handed her a kleenex. "Don't start that 'what if' game. You'll only make yourself feel worse." She said, sitting back down
"I just...It was so confusing." Katie said, blowing her nose.
"I know."
"How was I supposed to know if he was telling the truth?"
"You couldn't have known."
"I feel so bad."
"I'm sure he does to."
"Oh Nicole..."
"Well, You did just dump him."
"I know." Katie said quietly. Things were certainly going to be different.
"Those rumors were pretty bad."
"Gee thanks Nicole." Katie sniffed.
"Well they were."
"But we don't even know that he started them." Katie said.
"True."
"But who else would have?"
"We'll never know."
"You know, the more I think about it, the more it makes me mad."
"Why's that?"
"Because it all boils down to Zac. You're right. Who would have started them? As far as I know, I don't have any enemies, and those rumors were certainly targeted at me."
"You have a point."
"It had to be him."
"Yeah." Nicole said."
"But why?"
"I don't know."
"He told me over and over that it wasn't him, but..."
"But what?"
"I don't think i could believe him."
The two girls were silent for a few minutes.
"I didn't know what to think. Did I do the right thing?" Katie asked.
For once, Nicole didn't have an answer.
Katie woke up the next morning, and for a second, she forgot what the previous night's events were. She and Nicole went downstairs to get some breakfast as soon as they woke up.
"Sleepy head." Madison said with a giggle. Her mouth was full of Lucky Charms.
Katie frowned and looked at the clock. "It's eight thirty." She grumbled.
"Yes, and these three have been up since seven." Judy said, putting Kristen and Ben into their highchairs.
Katie groaned and got out two bowls for her and Nicole.
"What's the matter with her?" Sandra asked, opeing a poptart.
"Don't ask." Nicole said.
"No, tell me."
"Shut up, Sandra." Katie snapped.
"Watch it." Judy said sternly, lighting a cigarette.
Katie just glared and poured two bowls of cereal.
"Someone's in a crappy mood." Sandra commented.
"Sandra I swear..." Katie threatened.
"Girls." Judy said. "So, are we going to church? The late service starts at nine thirty."
"No!" Katie said quickly.
Judy jumped at her forcefullnes.
"Why not?" She asked.
Katie knew why not. Zac went to the same church that she did, that was why. She was nowhere near ready to see him.
"Um..." Katie's mind thought quickly. "I'm waaay to tired."
Judy frowned. "Again i'll ask; Why not?"
Katie knew she had been caught. "I just...don't want to go."
"Sounds like she's avoiding something." Sandra commented.
Katie glared at her sister. "Who don't you want to see?" Judy asked.
"No one."
"Zac?" Judy asked. Sandra's attention was immediately caught. She wanted to hear what her sister had to say.
"Maybe." katie muttered, eating her cereal.
"Why?"
"They broke up." Nicole said.
"Nicole!" Katie hollered.
"You did!?!?" Sandra asked.
"You weren't supposed to tell!" Katie hissed.
"Why?" Judy asked.
"Yeah, why?" Sadra chimed in.
"Sorry!" Nicole said, wincing.
"Oh god." Katie said, covering her face with her hands.
"Why did you break up?" Judy asked.
"Just tell us." Sandra said.
This was too much. "NO!" Katie screamed. With that, she ran up to her room, and they all heard the loud slam of her bedroom door.
