"I don't think i've ever felt so stupid in my LIFE!" Katie said, flopping down on her bed. She groaned loudly, and then put her feet up against the wall next to her bed.
"Why couldn't i see this an hour ago?" She asked herself outloud.
She sighed and stared up her ceiling. Now what was she going to do about meeting Zac about soccer? What was she going to tell Nicole? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Nicole would not hear of this. She would strangle her if she knew what Katie had done.
"What's wrong?" Morgan asked, opening Katie's door.
"Huh?"
"I heard you moanin and groanin in here. What's goin on?"
"Oh my god, what a mess!" Katie said, covering her face with her pillow.
"What's your problem now?" Morgan asked. "Things not go well with Zac?"
"You could say that."
"What?"
"I don't know..."
"What happened?"
"Well..." Katie began. "...I'm not sure where to start, really." She said.
"Oh."
"yeah."
"One of those."
"Well, it couldn't be that bad." Morgan said.
"Oh yes it could." Katie said, sitting up on her bed.
"Well, tell me then."
"Okay..." She sighed. "Here we go."
Morgan took a seat on Katie's shag rug in front of her bed and looked up at her sister, waiting for her to begin.
"You know how Zac sent me those roses?" Katie asked, pointing to the vase on her dresser.
"Yeah...Oh, gosh, those are so pretty. Those must have cost him like, forty bucks."
"Yeah, well, when i called Zac a few minuets ago, what i didn't know is that he didn't send them." Katie said.
Morgan gave her a quizzical look. "What? I though he did."
"So did i!" Katie exclaimed. "So did I..."
"Well..." Morgan prodded.
"Zac didn't send them...Ian did."
"Ian?"
"Yeah, he's this guy that i went to the movies with yesterday." Katie said.
"Oh."
"He's the one that's best friends with Zac."
"That one?"
"Yeah."
"That's not good."
"No, it's not." katie said, twisting her hands in her lap.
"So what are you going to say to Ian?" Morgan asked.
"I don't know."
"Well, you'll have to say something. My god, it's a boy that likes you. If you don't tell Nicole, she'll murder you too." Morgan pointed out.
"Oh i know." Katie said, groaning again.
They sat in silence for a moment, when Morgan said, "If Zac is just some stupid boy that's just so awful, why were you so excited about going out with him?"
"I don't like him."
"Could have fooled me."
"No." Katie said. She silently thought this new proposition over in her head. If she didn't really like Zac, then why was this such a big deal?
"Well you have to do something." said morgan.
"But what?"
"I'm not sure about that one."
"Well you're the big sister, shouldn't you be giving some big sisterly advice right about now?"
"I'm afraid i'm stumped on that one." Morgan said.
"Oh no."
"What?"
"You were my last resort."
"Oh."
"And to make matters worse, i have to go play soccer with Zac and Nicole Saturday at two, and somehow i have to let Zac know that he can't say anything to Nicole. She'll absolutely flip, Morgan."
"Yes, she will."
"How did this all happen?"
"I don't know, but you've got quite the mess to sort out."
"Uh huh."
"Whatever you do tomorrow, don't act all stupid like something IS up...just...try and act casual, and act really casual when you talk to Zac." Morgan said.
"Ok."
"Well...You've got the rest of the summer to figure out what to do before you meet even more guys to complicate it, so think well." Morgan said, opening her door.
"Hey Mo?"
"Yeah?" Morgan said, sticking her head back in.
"Thanks."
"Sorry i couldnt' be of much help."
"Yeah...but still...thanks."
"No prob." With that, the door closed, and Morgan was gone, leaving Katie alone with her thoughts.
She awoke around seven on Satuday, and tossed and turned for a few minutes before finally deciding it was no use. She got up, put on her slippers, then walked into the hallway. Looking out one of the skylights, she saw that the sky was a light gray color, and rain was lightly falling. Just right to fit my mood, she thought.
The previous day the hansons had come over to eat, and with Morgan's help, she had faked sick. While lying in bed, she heard her door open then shut quickly twice, and she knew it had to have been Zac. She got it out of Melissa that he had been wondering around. Now Katie really didn't know what to think.
She walked down the stairs into the kitchen to fix herself some breakfast. The house was eerily quiet, and she was almost creeped out by the silence. She decided that she would try to forget about her dilemma for the next six hours, and try her best not to worry.
She walked into the TV room and flipped the TV on after making herself a quick bowl of cereal. She sat down and channel surfed for awhile before settling on MTV, which was showing a continuous string of videos.
Katie ate her cereal for awhile, not really paying much attention to the TV, but watching the rain drip down the window sides.
"Rain or shine. I'll be there." She said to herself, remembering her engagement at two that afternoon. Oh well, she thought. It might be fun. For the next six hours, she would just hope Ian didn't play soccer.
Around nine thirty people started to get up, and Katie was glad, for it helped to take her mind off of soccer and Zac and Ian. She was in the TV room with Madison and Ben when she faintly heard the phone ring.
"Katie, it's for you." Judy yelled, holding out the phone from the kitchen.
"Okay!" She yelled back, picking up the phone on a table near her.
"Hello?" She said, thinking it was Nicole.
"Uh, hi." It was a boy, but who?
"Ian?" She asked.
"Why do you think i'm Ian every time i call?" Zac said.
"Oh hi Zac." She said nonchalantly.
"Oh hi to you too." He said.
"What do you want?" It sounded a lot meaner than she meant it too.
"I just wanted to know if you felt better, because i know you were SICK yesterday."
"SHut up!"
"What?"
"I was too sick."
"Uh huh." He said.
"give me a break." She said.
"Well i just wanted to know if we were still on today."
"Um, yeah, i just was wondering that."
"Well, rain or shine." he said.
"Ok."
silence.
"Well, see you there."
"Yeah."
silence.
"Zac, why did you call?"
"Bye Katie." He said abruptly, then hung up.
She stayed on the line a moment, the looked quizically at the phone, then hung up. He sure was strange sometimes.
