Chapter 6
The next morning, Nick woke up confused at why he wasn’t alone in his bed. It had been so long since he’d woken up with anyone that it was almost foreign to him. Shifting he opened one eye
and saw Kevin’s legs tangled in his own, the beautiful sleeping face of his lover inches away. He smiled and leaned down kissing the top of his head, a sense of contentment washing over him. Until he remembered the divorce papers, the reason why Kevin had come to his bed, and then Nick was overwhelmed by a feeling of anxiety. He untangled himself from Kevin’s grasp and went into the kitchen to get himself a glass of juice. He didnt’ know what this all meant and was afraid that Kevin had come to him only in desperation, not because he loved him like he claimed. IT meant too much to Nick to be just a one night stand, spurned on by feelings of depression over a failed marriage. He’d learned from Kevin last night that there had been a lot of fighting this past year, both he and Kristin realizing the mistake they’d made in getting married. He was supposed to have left for a few weeks to find out what he wanted, and that’s when he found himself on Nick’s doorstep. Kevin claimed that fate brought him to Nick’s and Nick had to wonder if he really meant it. Draining the last of his juice he jumped when he heard the phone ring. He wanted to answer it before it woke Kevin up so he rushed to the hand held and clicked the TALK button.
"Hello?"
"Um, Hello? Is this Nick?"
Nick’s pulse began to race and his plams started to sweat. He couldnt’ believe that she was calling. And after what had happened the night before. This couldn’t be good. "Um, yeah. Hey Kristin. How are you?" He hoped she didn’t notice the discomfort in his voice.
"I’m good sweetie. Ummm."
"You want Kevin?" Nick asked, hearing her pause.
"No...yes... I don’t know. Is he there?"
"Sleeping. I can wake him if you’d like." Nick’s heart suddenly began to break, knowing that last night had been a mistake, that in the morning, Kevin was still married to Kristin.
"No. Please don’t Nick. I just want to know... Did he get.. Did they arrive." And Nick knew exactly what she was talking about, looking over at the divorce papers.
"Yes, he got them yesterday."
"Is he okay?"
"I don’t know." And Nick realized he didn’t. He didn’t know if Kevin was okay because they hadn’t talked about it, not really anyways.
"If he’s there he has to be okay Nick. He’s found his way back to you and everything is how it’s supposed to be. How it should have been from the start."
Nick didn’t understand what she meant by that, his brain not comprehending her words. "I don’t understand Kris."
"Be careful with him Nick. He loves you. He’s always loved you. Even when he tried to convince himself otherwise, he knew deep down that you were the one. No matter what road we take Nickolas, we always end up exactly where we belong. It was a long trip for him, for us, but he’s finally where he should be. How do you think I knew to send the papers to you?"
And suddenly Nick wanted to cry, because everything he had ever wished for, dreamed of had been solidified and handed to him in this one phone call.
"I’m sorry Kris." And Nick was. He knew how much she loved Kevin and how this must have hurt her, how it was killing her because he had gone through the same thing 2 years before at their wedding. Knowing that the one thing that you live for, lives for someone else.
"I’m sorry too Nick. But please, take care of him. He’s so scared. But he loves you more than anyone, more than anything."
Nick spoke to Kristin a short while longer, his fears easing with each confession from her mouth. He couldn’t let himself believe that Kevin would return the love he felt for him, but hearing it from Kristin he knew it must be true. Hanging up the phone with her, Nick made his way back to his bedroom, relieved to see that Kevin was still sleeping soundly, a look of content on his face that Nick hadn’t seen in a very long time. It was as if he’d finally found peace, found serenity and Nick was proud to know that he had something to do with that. Careful not to wake him, Nick snuck back into the bed and wrapped himself around Kevin, sighing as he felt Kevin relax into his embrace. He kissed Kevin’s neck and smiled. It had taken them some time to get to where they were now, and Nick knew that they still had a ways to go. As great as the night before had been, they needed to talk about their feelings and come to an understanding of what both men wanted. But for now, Nick was happy in the knowledge that Kevin loved him and was in love with him. Nothing else really mattered. It was a time of new beginnings, and Nick couldn’t wait to start his life with Kevin.
