“Ahhh...peace and...” Justin murmered to no one in particular, pinching his baby blue bedsheets. He was interrupted by the phone ringing. He rolled over on his bed, making no effort to reach the baby blue cordless that sat on his bed side table. A few seconds later, Kayla walked into the room.
“Phone.” She said, stiffly.
“Who is it?” Justin asked.
“Britney. Britney Spears.” Suddenly, Justin knew why Kayla was mad. Britney and Justin had been a couple—a very cool and special couple—, but Britney had broken his heart, and Kayla was very sad that her brother had to go through all of it.
“Thanks Kay. No offense, could you leave? Ya know, for...privacy?” he asked.
“No prob!” She said. “Have fun with Ms. Spears, why don’t ya?” she said sarcastically. She slammed the door shut, and left. He could hear her in her room, turning on a CD and belting out “It’s Gonna Be Me”. He smiled as he pictured her doing the moves Justin had taught her earlier in the week. He turned his attention to Britney.
“Hello?” Justin asked causiosly.
“Hey, Justin, Honey! Why haven’t you called? I’ve missed you!!” She said. Justin could almost see her pouting in her all-lilac room.
“Brit, in case you haven’t noticed, we broke up!!” He said.
“I know...but can we at least be friends?” she asked. She sounded sincere.
“Well, okay. One sec.” He put the phone on his dresser and leaned over to the wall that connected Kayla and his room together. Now, she was singing “I’ll Never Stop”. He turned back to the phone.
“Where’d ya go?” Britney asked him.
“Nowhere, checking on my girl.” He said.
“Your...girl? Who is she?” Britney exclaimed. Justin laughed.
“She’s my step-sister!!” He said.
“Oh...” They talked for a good 20 minutes, and then hung up. Kayla had left already for a coffee at Ben’s Coffee Shop, which was a 5 minute walk from their house. Justin decided to go join her. He ran down the steps, grabbed his jacket, and headed out the door.
The bells chimed above Justin’s head as he walked through the doors of Ben’s Coffee Shop. He looked around for Kayla, but couldn’t find her. He placed his hands on his baby blue Oakleys, making sure that they were still on. His curls were protected by a baby blue OP bucket hat. He avoided a waitress who was carrying a coffee on one hand. He headed over to the counter.
“Um, did a girl with brown hair, come in?” he asked the woman behind the counter.
“Yeah, are you Justin?? Kayla told me about you. I’m her friend, Katie.” He stared at her in awe. He was partly relieved she didn’t yell or cry like most other fans. That was the last thing he needed with the wedding and everything coming up. She laughed, “Well, what do you want me to say? ‘Oh My God, J.T. is here!” She laughed. “But I really like you, but I’ll get yor auto later!” She exclaimed.
“Uh, yeah. I think she was here, so do you know where she went?” He asked. For the first time, he realized that Katie was cute.
“Yeah, she just left. She told me that she was going to Limited Too, in California Central, you know, the mall?” She quiered.
“Uh, yeah. It’s off California Boulevard, right?” He asked, looking into her deep green eyes. He quickly looked away, blushing.
“Yeah. Need a ride?” she asked.
“Nah, it’s okay. Thanks Katie. Mabe we could go out sometime?” he asked, instantly regretting it.
“Sure, you can get my number from Kayla. See ya Justin” she said, and walked behind the counter to serve a customer.
‘Whoa’ He thought as he stepped outside.
