Chapter 14

Courtney stopped on the doorstep with Lance beside her. She turned to face him. She smiled at the slight smile playing on his lips. This had been such a great night, she prayed she wouldn’t do anything stupid now. His voice interrupted her rambling thoughts.
“So…” he smiled, slightly looking away from her eyes. “I hope you had a good time” he said, returning his gaze to hers almost searching for an answer. Courtney smiled. Wasn’t it obvious? “I had a wonderful time” she said nodding her head. A moment of awkward silence passed.
“Well, Court, have a good night” he said, leaning over, quickly kissing her cheek. “Good night, Lance” she smiled. As Lance turned away to walk to his car her smile remained. Without another thought, she unlocked the door, letting herself into her house.
JC turned the corner to go down the stairs. “Holy shit!”
JC jumped at the sight of another body in the house. “Sorry Court, I didn’t mean to scare you.” JC whispered, hoping Courtney’s scream didn’t wake Dakota. “Damn boy. You scared the shit out of me!” she whispered, following his cue to keep it down. From there, Courtney’s mind wandered. What was JC doing upstairs, coming out of his old room, a room that now belonged to Dakota. “It’s not what it looks like” JC said, interrupting her thoughts. She hated how he could still read her mind. Too many possibilities.
“I’m sure it’s not” Courtney smiled, joking. She knew Dakota too well to think anything had happened. And even more, she knew Josh. They both stood still in their tracks, him a step higher than her, making her quite a lot shorter than him. He laughed. “I should get going.”
Come to think of it, she hadn’t seen his jeep. She’d notice that thing anywhere. “I needed air so I took a walk. I sorta just ended up here.” He said.
Damn. He did it again. She banned herself from thinking around him. “Good night, sweetheart.” He said, kissing her forehead as he passed her going down the stairs. “Night, Josh” she said quietly. He reached the bottom of stairs when her voice hit him from behind.
“You like her, don’t you?” Courtney asked. He didn’t turn around, scared to see a hurt face. “Josh?” Slowly he turned. “I do.” He stated simply, hoping for the best. Courtney smiled. “Feel better now.” He sighed, smiled, and shook his head. “Much.”
“Josh. It’s not a crime to like her ya know? You coulda told me right away.” She smiled. “To be honest with ya Court, I wasn’t completely sure, up until tonight.” He shook his head.
Courtney made her way to join him downstairs. “Hey! What about you?! I think there’s a certain friend of mine who you haven’t talked to me about!” Josh came back, realizing the situation.
Courtney sighed. “Well, you know us.” She laughed. “Yes, I do. You’ve been eyeing each other for years and moving at the rate of snails. Actually, no. I think snails even mate faster than you two.” Josh laughed back. “Hey!” she smiled, hitting him jokingly in the stomach. “Ooo. The truth hurts.” JC said laughing.
“Truth? I like him. You know that. I’d like to try to go somewhere with an ‘us’ but we’ll see. I guess only time will tell” she said. His mind shifted to Dakota and he realized how similar his situation was with Courtney’s. “Time, huh?” Josh sighed. “Yeah, I guess time is all we can really ask for.”
