Sally Yeh...
Sally Yeh was born in the heart of Taiwan, Taipei, on 30 September 1961. At the young tender age of four, her parents migrated to Victoria (or was it Vancouver?), Canada, where Sally received her education. She returned to Taiwan at the age of eighteen. Sally's accidental road to movie stardom began one day when she ran into someone in the showbiz industry while buying fried chicken. She was approached to star in movies & subsequently Sally began singing the soundtracks/theme songs for the movies in which she starred. This paved the way for the start of a highly successful singing career, an area where she is highly acknowledged for till today. Sally has stopped starring in movies since the early '90s. Though she had taken on mostly comedian roles throughout her acting career, Sally's talent in acting did not go unnoticed as she was nominated for 'Best Actress' in 1986 for her role in 'Peking Opera Blues'. Sally's singing career was definitely not without hitches, to say the least. Having received aWestern education in Canada, Sally was only fluent in English. To her parents' credit, she could converse in Mandarin, but was totally illiterate in Chinese. She had to start learning the Cantonese dialect from scratch when her singing career brought her to Hong Kong where she has been based for years. Despite these major language barriers, she was able to overcome them & went on to carve a niche for herself not only in Hong Kong & Taiwan, but throughout Asia. Sally is also one of the earliest, if not the first Asian female singer to have collaborated with Western singers in singing projects. In 1992, American pop sensation, Tommy Page, wrote an English song entitled 'With All My Heart' especially for Sally as well as sang a duet 'I'm Always Dreaming Of You' together. The duet was highly popular & very much well-received. Following this success, Sally recorded yet another duet 'I Believe In Love' with veteran singer James Ingram in 1993. Sally was touted as the Queen Of Canto-pop from the late '80s - mid '90s. Sally's singing accolades are numerous as she bagged much of the major singing awards at the peak of her career in the early '90s. In fact, she was the only Hong Kong female singer to have won 'Most Popular Female Singer' Award for four straight consecutive years! Currently, Sally is blissfully married to mentor-husband George Lam. They were wedded on 17 July 1996, in Victoria, Canada & have bought a house together in San Francisco. After more than fifteen years of success in the entertainment industry with more than twenty movies & more than twenty-five albums to her name, Sally is very much inclined to take things easy right now. Her latest major project was a highly successful ten-day concert together with singer-husband George at the Hong Kong Coliseum in April 1998 where she performed to fans who came from all over the world & once again proved why she's still the best. Perhaps the best thing about Sally is her never-ending concern for her fans. Though rumors of her retirement have been rife, since her marriage to George & also after repeated revelations of her desire to have a child soon, Sally has always maintained her stand that she will continue to sing for as long as her fans wish her to. To quote Sally herself: "I'm just gonna keep going until no one wants to see me anymore & then I'll stop." So, to all Sally's fans out there, the message is clear, yeah? |
