Lady of the Lake

High in the hills of Scotland, in a lake which bore her name,
dwelled a Goddess of great renown and wide reaching fame.
A nature Goddess, protector of all natural things,
and her favorite seasonal gifts were surely spring's.
Each year when spring returned to the rough and tumble highlands
the children of the Goddess would search the hills, meadows and islands
gathering flowers precious to the Goddess that dwelled within the lake
and on the first day of spring, their offerings make.
The Goddess loved this ritual of spring
and waited each years for the gifts of flowers that this day would bring.
Who know the thousands of years that this joy was shared
by the Goddess of the lake and her children that worshipped her there.

One day a band of strangers found their way to the village on the lake
and for many months, hospitality of the lake people the strangers did take.
The customs of simple folks were observed with care
as the rewards and gifts of the Goddess, the strangers did share.
As the Children of the Goddess approached the lake on the first day of spring
the strangers revealed weapons and did a terrible thing.
Patrick was the leader of the visitor band
and had set his life work as making Christ the ruler of the land.
With threat of death the Children were forced to abandon the Goddess of the lake
and as their savior the name of Jesus to take.

As Patrick prepared to depart from lake's troubled shore
he declared that the Goddess should be known as a monster forever more,
So Nessie, the beautiful Goddess of spring
soon became known as a monster and fearful thing.
Yet as the years come and go
Nessie swims the depths of Loch Ness, waiting for the return of days She used to know.
