How to write a great personals ad!

Before you even think about placing a personal ad whether it's on the web or in a publication, you need to be ready, ready mentally to meet people. What makes a personal ad great? Is it your photo, your bio, your honesty, your age, weight, or height, or your income? Is it the color of your hair, your race, the color of your eyes, your beliefs, or how many children you have?

The answer is that all of these things can serve to make your personal ad a great personal ad but the key ingredient in any great personals ad is authenticity. Another key is to be positive. No one worth your getting to know will respond to your ad if you are negative.

There is no doubt that men and women look for many differing things in a personals ad, and things that peak their curiosity. When writing a personals ad, be honest. Be honest about everything in your ad. Do not be elusive by leaving things out that the reader wants to know, after all if you want your personals ad to stand out among the many thousands of others, you need to be brutally honest about yourself and what you are looking for in a partner.

For instance, if you are overweight, say so. Don't say that you are average when you weight 10 pounds over average. This applies to both men and women.

The one thing that I have learned in finding my soul mate is that, soul mates, true soul mates, share a range of common interests. While opposites do attract, opposites make for horrible potential soul mates.

Photos - You'll need at least two. The main photo should be a portrait photo (shoulders above) of yourself with a smile on your face. The second photo should be a standing photo showing you in your entirety. Don't forget to date the photos. We would all like to think that we are as handsome or as pretty now as we were ten years ago but the fact remains, we all change and we all age. if you post any old photo of yourself without stating how old the photo is, then you are only serving to mislead your audience. Eventually, your deception will come back to haunt you. Now that you have the first two photos of yourself posted, add other photos of yourself depending on who you are. For example, If you are a very old fashioned lady that loves to dance, upload a photo of yourself dressed in an evening gown. If you are a jeans and t-shirt lady, then how about posting a photo of yourself in jeans and a t-shirt. Guys, if you are truly comfortable in a shirt and tie then post one, if however, a shirt and tie makes it difficult to breathe, then by all means, don't post it. Trust me guys, it will be evident.

Note: If have colored your hair in any of your photos, say so. Nothing seems more ambiguous or dishonest than seeing a photo of a person in dark hair, when the ad says that you have light colored hair or vice versa. Avoid misleading the reader. Never post any group photos!

Bio - This is where you get your chance to tell the reader about yourself. In your bio, you need to describe your beliefs, your passions, and your goals. Remember, the more information that you give your reader, the more responses that you are likely to receive from people who share common interests and beliefs with you. Avoid the temptation to tell your readers what you don't want in a mate! It's never good to be negative.

Hobbies and interests - Be honest, give the reader your list. Be detailed, if you enjoy rock music, then state rock music not just music. If you like doing crafts, tell the reader what kind of crafts as there is a lot of difference between sewing and collecting pottery both of which are crafts.

Personal Information - At a minimum, state your age, your weight, your hair and eye color, and the city and state where you live.

What you are looking for - Be very specific. If you are only looking for friends then say so but do not expect to meet your soul mate. This never works. Friends means friends. Looking for long-term relationship and marriage. Say so. Are you looking for a long term relationship but never want to get married, then say that too!

Children - State the ages of your children and whether they live with you or someone else. If your children are married, then say that they are married. If you want children, say so, if you don't, then say that too!

Occupation - What do you do? Be honest! We all start at the bottom of the ladder and work our way up. Do you work part time or full time. Avoid terms like domestic engineer (how cheesy), business owner, etc. If you own a business then state the type of business. Example: If you own a thrift shop, say thrift shop owner not entrepreneur.

If you are truly ready to meet new people, if you have identified yourself, if you have dealt with your emotional baggage and put it behind you, if you are brutally honest, if you have posted two or more photos, then regardless of your personality, your hobbies, your interests, the amount of children you have or don't have, or your location, you have created a great personals ad and the amount of responses that you get will be overwhelming. Even if you do not meet your soul mate, you will have met many, many new friends along the way!
