RED RIDER - "HUMAN RACE"
Topic: New Chords Postings

The classic line-up of Red Rider was born in the late 1970's when Tom Cochrane saw the band perform one night at Toronto's El Mocambo nightclub. He introduced himself to the band and, after an audition, they took him on as their singer and primary songwriter.

"Human Race" is from Red Rider's third studio album Neruda (1983). The title was a reference to Pablo Neruda, who was a Nobel Literature Prize-winning Chilean poet and political activist. It was the band's third consecutive album to achieve at least gold status in Canada. "Human Race" reached #27 on the Canadian national RPM charts.

The video for this song actually combines two songs from the record, "Light In the Tunnel" (which opens the record) and "Human Race". On the album, the two songs are seperate, with the track "Power" coming in between them. But when the record was released on CD, a bonus track at the end of the record featured these two songs combined as a single track. (Previous hits "White Hot" and "Lunatic Fringe" were also added as bonus tracks.)

On the video, "Human Race" starts at the 1:40 mark:

Added note: By clicking on the "Audio" link of the menu on Greer's site, you can listen to any of the four Red Rider studio albums -- Don't Fight It, As Far As SiamNeruda, and Breaking Curfew -- in their entirety.

"SECRET INFORMATION"
Topic: New Tab Postings

It seems kind of fitting that this tab should follow on the heels of "Superstitious Feeling", because the two songs kind of remind me of one another. It's not that they sound the same, but they have similar qualities. Both have that rather ominous aura about them. And they both have two-word, six-syllable titles, with the emphasis coming on the fifth syllable. "Superstitious FEEL-ing"..."Secret Infor-MA-tion". So they have a tendency to remind me of each other. Well, if you know both songs, you'll know what I mean. Smile

"Secret Information" comes from Chilliwack's Opus X (1982) album. It was the band's tenth album, therefore the "X". Band members Bill Henderson and Brian MacLeod received the Juno Award for Producer Of the Year for their work on the album, but it was the last Chilliwack album that featured the best-known line-up of the band. Guitarist MacLeod and bassist Ab Bryant then left Chilliwack to concentrate full time on their other band, the Headpins. Singer/guitarist/keyboardist Henderson recorded one more studio album under the Chilliwack name.

LOVERBOY
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

"Turn Me Loose" was one of Loverboy's earliest singles, drawn from the band's self-titled debut album (1980). The band had been rejected by all US-based record labels. Columbia Records Canada signed them as a means of meeting Canadian Content regulations. The Bruce Fairburn-produced album proved to be a huge success in Canada, setting sales records for a debut record. Sales topped 700, 000 in Canada.

This made the US branch of Columbia Records take notice, and they signed the band. The album ultimately went double platinum in the US, and had sales topping 4 million worldwide. "Turn Me Loose" reached #35 on the charts in the US. I couldn't find a national Canadian chart listing, but the song reached #4 on the CHUM charts, which I think is a pretty good reflection of how well the song did across the country. Tabbed here is the Intro, which is one of those custom made "arena rock guitar hero" moments. Cool Spotlight on Paul Dean.

This live version gives a pretty clear view of Paul Dean playing this part (once the camera gets past the crowd), although the fills differ somewhat from the studio version:

"LOVIN' YOU AIN'T EASY"
Topic: New Chords Postings

Tonight has taken on a bit of a Quebec theme for me. I spent most of the evening watching the Montreal Canadiens' home opener, complete with all the ceremonies marking the beginning of the team's 100th season. And even though the game nearly got away (Bruins tied it in the last minute), the Habs won it in a shootout. Smile

So, in keeping with the theme, today's chord chart posting is "Lovin' You Ain't Easy" by Quebec singer/songwriter Michel Pagliaro. This was, of course, one of his English language hits. It's from the album Pagliaro, although saying that doesn't really narrow things down. A check of the discography page on his website shows he has about five albums called "Pagliaro".  But this is the one from 1971. The song also appears on his greatest hits CD Hit Parade (pictured).

Pagliaro was the first Canadian performer to earn gold records in both official languages, and earlier this year (May) he received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, a lifetime achievement award.

"SUPERSTITIOUS FEELING"
Topic: New Tab Postings

Posted today is Harlequin's "Superstitious Feeling", from the band's One False Move (1982) album. It's also on their Greatest Hits CD (pictured). This is one from the request file, as the Harlequin tabs often are. There's not too much to say about it, except here's some more Harlequin. That always seems to be a pretty good decision around here. Harlequin is one of the most-viewed bands on the site. Of course, in regard to that, a lot depends on how many tabs of a particular band are on the site, and Harlequin has more than most. But I guess that's because people seem interested in them, and I don't think there are many tabs of theirs available. So I keep doing them.

I'm not adding the song to the video page because the only video footage available on YouTube has only part of the song, and the quality is a bit rough. I will link to that footage from this blog post, though.

"COME AND GET IT"
Topic: New Chords Postings

This is one of those songs that you think is going to be no problem. Two minute pop song, fairly simple melody. Then you work out the first chord. E flat. Ugh. Then you know it's trouble.

The song is carried by piano, I don't think there even is any guitar on the recording, so it could be in Eb. But that's pretty cumbersome for guitar playing. So then you try to decide what key to go to, while staying in the same pitch as the record...up to E Major (requiring tuning down half a tone) or down to D major (requiring a capo at the first fret). I opted for D, since capo-ing is a much easier alteration than re-tuning.

Then I watched some video, and needless to say, it looked like they were playing in E. Undecided  Well, in some footage it did, anyhow. So much for the simple pop song. So I re-worked the chord chart, doing it in E. But for somebody who just wants to strum chords, I still think it's easier to capo and play it in D. So I've included both versions. Of course, you can always strum it in E, not tune down, and just don't play with the record. Your options are boundless. Laughing

"Come And Get It", a Paul McCartney-penned track, is from Badfinger's first record Magic Christian Music (1969), so called because three of the songs on the record were featured in the film "The Magic Christian", which starred Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr. The rest of the record is rounded out by tracks the band recorded when they still went under the name The Iveys. But the name change took place before the first full length LP was released.
