LOVERBOY - "HOT GIRLS IN LOVE"
Topic: New Tab Postings

One from the request file today, Loverboy's "Hot Girls In Love". The song is from the band's third album Keep It Up, released in 1983. The record went double platinum in the US, with "Hot Girls In Love" becoming their most successful single up to that point. It peaked at #11 on the Billboard chart, aided by heavy rotation on video stations like MuchMusic and MTV. This degree of success garnered the band its first headlining tour. The one time I saw Loverboy live was the year before this (summer of 1982). They opened for April Wine at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, although with the kind of success both bands were enjoying at the time, it was more like a great double bill.

BOB SEGER - "AMERICAN STORM"
Topic: New Chords Postings

"American Storm" is the opening track of Bob Seger's 13th studio album Like A Rock (1986), his fifth with The Silver Bullet Band. The album went platinum, reaching #3 in the US. "American Storm" rose to #13 on the US Hot 100 and reached #2 on the Rock Charts. The song title was also tapped as the name of Seger's 1986 tour. It was a nine-month, 105-show affair, which sold 1.5 million tickets. At the time, Seger said the American Storm Tour would be his last major tour.

HEADPINS - "CELEBRATION"
Topic: New Tab Postings

It's pretty common knowledge amongst listeners of Canadian rock music that Headpins were born as a side project of Chilliwack guitarist Brian MacLeod and bassist Ab Bryant, and that the project ultimately became a full time venture. Perhaps less well known is the fact that the band originally had a different lead singer. It's hard to imagine Headpins without Darby Mills' famous growl, but the band's first lead singer was Denise McCann. Remember the 1979 disco hit "Tattoo Man"? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1peo9NhafAY) Yeah, that Denise McCann. She left after a year, in stepped Darby Mills, and the rest is Headpins history.

The tab posted today, "Celebration", was a single from the band's second album Line Of Fire (1983). All three Headpins studio albums achieved at least gold status (in Canada). Line Of Fire went platinum. And I guess that was plenty of cause for "Celebration". Smile

NAZARETH
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

Today's riff entry comes from Nazareth, a band who took their name not from the Middle East city in the Holy Land, but rather from the first line of the song "The Weight" by The Band. ("I pulled into Nazareth, Was feelin' 'bout half past dead...") The Nazareth referred to in the song is Nazareth, Pennsylvania. And as a further bit of trivia, Nazareth, PA, just happens to be the home of C.F. Martin & Co. guitar manufacturers.

But back to the riff. It's the Intro from the title song of the band's Razamanaz (1973) album. This was Nazareth's third album, and it was produced by Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover.

RED RIDER - "HUMAN RACE"
Topic: New Chords Postings

The classic line-up of Red Rider was born in the late 1970's when Tom Cochrane saw the band perform one night at Toronto's El Mocambo nightclub. He introduced himself to the band and, after an audition, they took him on as their singer and primary songwriter.

"Human Race" is from Red Rider's third studio album Neruda (1983). The title was a reference to Pablo Neruda, who was a Nobel Literature Prize-winning Chilean poet and political activist. It was the band's third consecutive album to achieve at least gold status in Canada. "Human Race" reached #27 on the Canadian national RPM charts.

The video for this song actually combines two songs from the record, "Light In the Tunnel" (which opens the record) and "Human Race". On the album, the two songs are seperate, with the track "Power" coming in between them. But when the record was released on CD, a bonus track at the end of the record featured these two songs combined as a single track. (Previous hits "White Hot" and "Lunatic Fringe" were also added as bonus tracks.)

On the video, "Human Race" starts at the 1:40 mark:

"SECRET INFORMATION"
Topic: New Tab Postings

It seems kind of fitting that this tab should follow on the heels of "Superstitious Feeling", because the two songs kind of remind me of one another. It's not that they sound the same, but they have similar qualities. Both have that rather ominous aura about them. And they both have two-word, six-syllable titles, with the emphasis coming on the fifth syllable. "Superstitious FEEL-ing"..."Secret Infor-MA-tion". So they have a tendency to remind me of each other. Well, if you know both songs, you'll know what I mean. Smile

"Secret Information" comes from Chilliwack's Opus X (1982) album. It was the band's tenth album, therefore the "X". Band members Bill Henderson and Brian MacLeod received the Juno Award for Producer Of the Year for their work on the album, but it was the last Chilliwack album that featured the best-known line-up of the band. Guitarist MacLeod and bassist Ab Bryant then left Chilliwack to concentrate full time on their other band, the Headpins. Singer/guitarist/keyboardist Henderson recorded one more studio album under the Chilliwack name.

LOVERBOY
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

"Turn Me Loose" was one of Loverboy's earliest singles, drawn from the band's self-titled debut album (1980). The band had been rejected by all US-based record labels. Columbia Records Canada signed them as a means of meeting Canadian Content regulations. The Bruce Fairburn-produced album proved to be a huge success in Canada, setting sales records for a debut record. Sales topped 700, 000 in Canada.

This made the US branch of Columbia Records take notice, and they signed the band. The album ultimately went double platinum in the US, and had sales topping 4 million worldwide. "Turn Me Loose" reached #35 on the charts in the US. I couldn't find a national Canadian chart listing, but the song reached #4 on the CHUM charts, which I think is a pretty good reflection of how well the song did across the country. Tabbed here is the Intro, which is one of those custom made "arena rock guitar hero" moments. Cool Spotlight on Paul Dean.
