MAX WEBSTER - "BLOWING THE BLUES AWAY"
Topic: New Tab Postings

In what's been a mostly overcast and rainy week, this seems like an appropriate tab to be posting, (although it's quite nice out today.) So, by request, "Blowing the Blues Away", a relaxed feel-good tune from Max Webster's 1976 self-titled debut album. Like "Let Go the Line", the previous Max tab posted here, this song was penned by keyboardist Terry Watkinson. While it seems like a pretty straightforward song, there are some things about the tab that I'm not sure about. Those things are outlined in the "Notes" section of the tab itself.

FIVE MAN ELECTRICAL BAND - "WEREWOLF"
Topic: New Chords Postings

In 1974, Five Man Electrical Band scored a Top 10 hit in Canada with the song "Werewolf". The single, which peaked at #6, first appeared on the LP The Power Of The Five Man Electrical Band, a greatest hits compilation that was released in 1975. This same album was later re-issued on CD under the title of Absolutely Right: The Best Of Five Man Electrical Band.

The song employs a narrative format lyrically, while dominant 7th chords are used effectively to create atmosphere and help build tension as the tale unfolds.

BLUE RODEO
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

Outskirts (1987) was the highly succesful debut album by Canadian country/roots rockers Blue Rodeo. The album climbed to #20 on Canada's album charts and achieved 4x platinum sales. Aside from the band's breakout hit "Try", Outskirts also featured the single "Rose-Coloured Glasses". That single charted at #40 in Canada.

The Intro of the latter is tabbed here. That Intro is pretty short, so I decided to include chord changes for the Verses and Chorus, too. Once I had done that, I figured I might as well add in the changes for the Break and the Bridge as well, so that all the pieces are there to play the complete song.

THE RUNAWAYS - "NEON ANGELS ON THE ROAD TO RUIN"
Topic: New Tab Postings

The Runaways are certainly topical these days, what with the feature film about their career that's currently in theatres. The film originally had a working title of Neon Angels: The Runaways. I guess that was abandoned somewhere along the line, since the final title seems to be simply The Runaways. That working title came from the fact that the movie is based on lead singer Cherie Currie's 1989 autobiography Neon Angel: The Cherie Currie Story.

And, in turn, the title of Currie's book comes from "Neon Angels On the Road To Ruin", a song on the band's second album, Queens Of Noise (1977). While some don't care for the high gloss production of this album, I think it's easily their best album in terms of material. On an album of strong tracks, "Neon Angels" stands out as one of the best, with its catchy, memorable riff, good melody, and strong vocal phrasing. The band even tinkers with some timing complexity here by starting out in 4/4 time, kicking into 12/8 for the bulk of the song, then returning to 4/4 for the end. Large parts of the solo also have 4/4 being played against the 12/8 rhythm. Speaking of which, Lita Ford unleashes a flashy solo here which showcases her already considerable guitar skills. This album was the band at its strongest. By the time of their next studio album, both Currie and bassist Jackie Fox had departed, and the band's sound lacked the dimension and diversity of the original recording line-up.

HELIX - "BREAKDOWN"
Topic: New Tab Postings

The Helix track "Breakdown" comes from the band's seventh studio album, Back For Another Taste (1990). They toured extensively behind the album, playing showcase bars. At one point during this touring, while in England, the band were called home to Canada to tour, in order to build on momentum started when the song "Good To the Last Drop" took off as a single there. Ultimately, the album peaked at #82 in Canada and #179 in the US.

This proved to be the last album for guitarist Paul Hackman. Tragedy struck Helix in July of 1992 when Hackman passed away from injuries incurred when the band's van rolled down an embankment fifty miles out of Kamloops, BC, after a show in Vancouver. Hackman had been with the band since their first album.

THE POPPY FAMILY - "WHERE EVIL GROWS"
Topic: New Chords Postings

Today's posting features some early 1970's pop psychedelia from the dark side. "Where Evil Grows" comes from The Poppy Family's second (and final) album, Poppy Seeds (1971). The album was the follow-up to their highly successful debut album, Which Way You Goin' Billy? (1969), with its #1 charting title song.

"Where Evil Grows", notable for its grim theme and dark undercurrent, was atypical of pop radio fare. The Terry and Susan Jacks-sung duet became a Top 10 hit in Canada. The Poppy Family disbanded in 1973 upon the breakup of the Jacks' marriage.
