ALDO NOVA - "UNDER THE GUN"
Topic: New Tab Postings

"Under the Gun" comes from Aldo Nova's 1982 self-titled debut record, an album that went double platinum in the US and reached #8 on the Billboard 200. It also produced the chart singles "Fantasy" and "Foolin' Yourself". In 1991, Nova's first and second albums were combined and re-released under the title A Portrait Of Aldo Nova. The song tabbed here was drawn on as the title song when this package was re-released again in 2007 as the 2-disc CD Under the Gun...A Portrait Of Aldo Nova.

THE CULT
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

Back in the 80's I knew a guy who really liked the band The Cult. And I liked them too, for that matter. One time when we were sitting around with one of their tapes playing, I happened to mention that (Cult lead singer) Ian Astbury had gone to a high school only a few blocks from the one I went to. (Astbury lived in Hamilton, ON in the mid-to-late 70's http://www.juicemagazine.com/THECULT.html) A few weeks later we went to see The Cult, who were plaing the CNE Grandstand. In a relatively quieter moment, between two songs, he turned to his best friend, gestured toward me, and told him, "She used to see Ian Astbury walking to school back in high school." Gotta love the way stories can get embellished that quickly, don't you? Laughing In all fairness, though, maybe he just misinterpreted what I originally said, and thought that's what I meant. But he probably just thought it sounded like a better story that way. Smile

That was the Electric tour, so this song hadn't been recorded yet, but it's a good one. It's from the band's fourth album, Sonic Temple (1989).

MAX WEBSTER - "A MILLION VACATIONS"
Topic: New Tab Postings

A Million Vacations (1979) was the only one of Max Webster's albums to achieve platinum status (which it did in Canada). The band scored a handful of hits off the album with radio-friendly tunes such as the title track.

The picture of Vacations to the right isn't the best or sharpest image I could find of the cover. But it did have one thing in its favour. There's one thing that irks me a bit about all of the Max Webster re-issue CDs. All of the covers of their CDs now have the text "featuring Kim Mitchell" prominently placed on them. This is not what the covers looked like when the albums originally came out. The band was Max Webster, not Max Webster featuring Kim Mitchell. Sure, I get it, Kim Mitchell's name recognition factor maybe helps to sell a few more old Max CDs. But couldn't they just put this text on a sticker on the cellophane wrapper of the CD? That would get the information out to people who might not know, but as soon as you took the plastic off the case, the CD booklet cover would look like the cover of the original release. Everybody's happy, right? But no, it has to be printed right on to the cover of all of the re-issues.  http://www.maxwebster.ca/MW_sounds.shtml So I wanted to find an image of the original album cover as it's supposed to look. Yeah, I know it's not a big deal, but Max Webster were a band, not someone and their backup band. But regardless, this tab (done by request) was fun to do. And it was a little more involved than I thought it would be at first. Which shouldn't surprise me, because it is afterall a Max tab. Wink

HERE COMES THE RAIN AGAIN
Topic: Bands/Music

I see some people have posted video at YouTube of the rain-soaked Kim Mitchell show I was at a few weeks ago. You can really see the rain teeming down in some of these clips. Just watching them makes me feel soaked to the bone all over again. And reminds me of what a good show it was. Cool The quality of the videos (and the sound) varies. Some are short clips, some are full songs. And sometimes it's hard to see him through the umbrellas. Tongue out

PRISM - "IT'S OVER"
Topic: New Chords Postings

Among the three charting singles from Prism's self-titled debut album (1977, pictured) was the power ballad "It's Over". This track, as well as most others on the record, was written by the band's drummer/producer Rodney Higgs. Higgs was none other than Jim Vallance writing under a pseudonym. Why? Vallance himself explains it this way:

"For many years, when asked to explain the reasons behind the pseudonym, I offered one of two answers:
(1). I didn't want my university classmates to know I was in a rock band, or ...
(2). I didn't want my family to know I was in a rock band.

I'm the source of both of these stories, and both are untrue. The truth is, quite simply, I was terrified. Prism was my first recording project, and with seven of the album's nine songs credited to me, I felt vulnerable and exposed. What if the album failed? So, I took the coward's way out and hid behind a fictitious name. That way, if the album "tanked" no-one could point a finger at Jim Vallance! Rodney Higgs would take the blame. I admit it was goofy, and certainly a cop-out. In fact, thirty years later I'm still mildly embarrassed by my decision!"
(jimvallance.com/01-music-folder/albums-folder/pg-album-prism-01-prism.html)

Well, the album didn't tank, and the only finger pointing might have been to point out the guy who wrote three hit singles for it ("Spaceship Superstar", "Take Me To the Kaptin", and "It's Over"). Vallance, of course, much more famously went on to become a hit-making machine as Bryan Adams' songwriting partner.

APRIL WINE - "JUST BETWEEN YOU AND ME"
Topic: New Tab Postings

I had some delays while doing this one (none of which had anything to do with the tab itself...got a cold from a night out in the rain, among other things), but when I actually did get some work done on it, it went pretty quickly. "Just Between You And Me" is, of course, one of April Wine's biggest hits. It's from the 1981 album The Nature Of the Beast, their most commercially succesful album. Some really nice, melodic playing on this song.

HAMMERED (WITH RAIN) IN THE HAMMER - KIM MITCHELL LIVE
Topic: Bands/Music

I'm still drying out. It's been one of those summers, right? Constant rain. (Give me that any time over constant heat and humidity, but that's beside the point.) Last night I went to see Kim Mitchell play; it was an outdoor show, part of the Festival of Friends in Hamilton (Ontario). Well, it just teemed rain all night. This was to be expected...because it's festival weekend, it's just a given. Tongue out But all week the news had been predicting rain for that night. They were right. We came prepared, but even in the two or three minutes it took to go from the car to the park, we were already pretty wet. (I had pretty much accepted right from the start I was going to get soaked.)

When we arrived (the "we" being me and my sister), David Wilcox' set was just getting going on the main stage. So we watched part of his show, and heard the rest of it while browsing the craft booths. He was really good, of course.

Kim Mitchell came on about 9:45, opening with "That's The Hold" and following up with "Rocklandwonderland". He commended us all for coming out on such a crummy night. I was well back from the stage (in order to see over the umbrellas!), so the large screen to the side of the stage was good for watching when he was playing guitar solos. Well, the screen went out on about the fourth song. Undecided Laughing A victim of the rain, I'm guessing. He scattered a few Max Webster songs through the set, "A Million Vacations", "Paradise Skies", and "Battle Scar". It was great to hear those ones done live again. Fittingly, the only time the rain eased up all night was when he was doing "Paradise Skies". Bassist Peter Fredette -- he of the amazing voice -- sang the Geddy Lee verse in "Battle Scar". The show closed out with "All We Are" (where Fredette's vocals really get showcased), "Patio Lanterns", and "Go For Soda". I thought due to the weather, they might not bother with an encore, but they did come back out (not making people wait long) to do "Lager & Ale". The show finished up at about 11:30.

Some other songs included were "Ain't Life Amazing", "In My Shoes", "Easy To Tame", "I Am A Wild Party", and "Lemon Wedge". Kimosabe delivered the goods, not cutting things short due to the miserable weather, playing for almost two hours. Everyone headed home soaked, but having seen a great show. Smile

(That's Kim in the top row of the ad, first picture on the left.)
