CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

I still haven't gotten my guitar into the shop, but I figured that in the meantime I might as well reattach the troublesome string to the peg, and get some work done.

1969 was undoubtedly the biggest chart year for Creedence Clearwater Revival. The band released three albums, all of which went Top Ten and achieved multi-platinum status. They also released a total of seven singles, three of which reached #2 on the pop charts, and one which climbed to #3.

The last of these three albums, issued in November, was Willy & The Poor Boys. It was CCR's fourth studio album, and it became a double platinum seller. The first single, "Down On the Corner", told the story of the fictional band of the album title, and it became a #3 hit, also being certified double platinum. Tabbed here are the Intro and the Instrumental Break.

TEMPORARY DELAY
Topic: Website

I haven't gotten any new tab posted in the past week or so, and unfortunately, it's going to stay that way for awhile. A few days ago I was all ready to get a fresh set of strings on my guitar before I moved on to the next tab. But I found that one of the old strings was refusing to come off the guitar. The ball end of the string is jammed in the under part of the bridge, and I haven't had any success in getting it dislodged. The string comes up through the back of the body and through a trem system, so accessing the trouble spot is pretty much impossible for me. I decided to leave it to the professionals. I called my local music store and asked about repairs.

I'll be taking the guitar in to the shop sometime this week. Hopefully, they can fix it there without too much trouble, so that I can be back in business soon. Smile

MAINTENANCE
Topic: Website

I spent last night cleaning up the video page. It turned out to be not quite as bad as I was expecting. One day awhile back I had clicked on a bunch of the links on that page and it seemed like almost half the videos were no longer there. I guess that's the nature of YouTube, though. A video that's there one day can be gone the next. Now you see 'em, now you don't. When the videos are gone, it's always one of three reasons listed:
a) user has removed the video
b) user has violated terms of use
c) copyright claim by publisher/record label

The day I did the test of the handful of links, it was the Various column on the lower part of the page I was testing. A lot of those videos were gone, so I expected it to be the same with both other columns. It turned out not to be that way, though. Last night I tested all of the links on that page. In the Canadian column I had to remove about four links. In the Girlschool column, it was just one. In the Various colum, I had to remove twelve links. That's the area that took the biggest hit. There's practically nothing left in that column now! On the upper part of the page where the embedded videos are, I needed to remove two of them. I'll also need to test the embedded videos on other pages (I just thought of that, so I haven't done it yet).

So right now all the links on the Video Page should be good...for awhile, at least.

LEE AARON - "SWEET TALK"
Topic: New Tab Postings

Lee Aaron wasn't always Lee Aaron; she was born Karen Lynn Greening. Early in her career she was in a band called Lee Aaron, and she ultimately adopted the moniker as her own. But by whatever name, for years she carried the label of "Metal Queen", due to both her musical style and her song of the same name. While this gave her a distinctive and memorable image throughout the early to mid-80's, it didn't necessarily translate into chart success.

In 1987, Aaron released a self-titled album, aiming for a more commercial sound. The plan worked, as she had a successful single with the ballad "Only Human". Her 1989 album Bodyrock (pictured) continued in the same vein -- amping up the commercial aspect even more -- and produced hits that year in "Hands On" and "Whatcha Do To My Body". In 1990, a third single was released from the album, the heavy metal power ballad "Sweet Talk". The song was edited/shortened for release as a single, but I've tabbed the full album version. I couldn't find the full version online anywhere, so I've linked to the video of it at YouTube. This is the edited version, about two minutes shorter than the album version.

Bodyrock became Lee Aaron's most succesful album, selling 200,000+ copies. Since then, she's gone on to reinvent herself once more, this time as a jazz stylist, but she continues to perform songs from her full catalogue. Which is probably a wise decision, because for many people, she'll always be the Metal Queen.

FIVE FOR FIGHTING - "SUPERMAN (IT'S NOT EASY)"
Topic: New Chords Postings

You don't tug on Superman's cape. I am Superman and I know what's happening. Superman never made any money saving the world from Solomon Grundy. So say/sing Jim Croce, R.E.M. and The Crash Test Dummies respectively. When it comes to comic book superheroes, the pop/rock world clearly thinks Superman is where it's at. Sure, there's a handful of Batman songs, and I can remember an old Katrina & The Waves song called "Spiderman". But overall, Superman is the undisputed champ. As a matter of fact, the Superman Homepage cites 460 (!) different songs that are either about or refer to Superman or Clark Kent. (www.supermanhomepage.com/radio/radio.php?topic=r-songs)

Then there's Five For Fighting. Here it sounds like we should be talking about Tie Domi or Donald Brashear, or some other NHL enforcer. But, of course, we're really talking about Los Angeles singer-songwriter John Ondrasik, who uses the hockey term as his performing name. His second album, America Town (2000), achieved platinum status despite not even breaking into the Top 50 of Billboard's album chart. It managed to hit the million mark in sales based primarily on the strength of the album's biggest single, "Superman (It's Not Easy)". The song emerged as a popular culture means of healing in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the US. Late in 2001, Ondrasik performed the song at The Concert for New York City. "Superman" rose to #14 on the Billboard singles chart, and it remains Ondrasik's highest charting single to date.

JOURNEY
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

In 1977, San Francisco band Journey were at a transitional point in their career. After three albums, no breakthrough success had yet come. The band, which previously hadn't had a bona fide frontman, then added lead vocalist Robert Fleischman and opted for a more commercial sound. But the new vocalist's stay in the band would turn out to be relatively brief. Within a year he had been replaced by vocalist Steve Perry.

With the addition of Perry, Journey found the winning combination they had been looking for. Their fourth studio album, Infinity (1978), was a huge hit, achieving triple platinum status in the US. The first single, "Wheel In the Sky", proved to be Fleischman's most notable legacy to Journey; he had written the song with guitarist Neal Schon and bassist Ross Valory during his tenure in the band. "Wheel" reached #57 on the Billboard chart, and Journey went on to have eighteen Top 40 singles, ten of them being Top 10 Hits.

Tabbed here is the Intro. One playing note regarding the final four bars: This part consists of a combination of a strummed D5 chord and individually played bass notes. The most efficient way to play this part is to fret the D5 chord with your index and ring fingers, and fret the bass notes with your middle finger. By using this fingering, you can continue to hold the chord while playing the bass notes.

DOUCETTE - "MAMA LET HIM PLAY"
Topic: New Tab Postings

This one took awhile, but now "the Douce is loose". "Mama Let Him Play" -- Jerry Doucette's most succesful single -- was drawn from his 1978 debut album of the same name (pictured). The disc was recorded for the ill-fated Mushroom Records, (whose roster also included Chilliwack and Heart). It rapidly achieved platinum status in Canada, and in 1979 Doucette landed the Juno Award for Most Promising Group. The follow-up album The Douce Is Loose (1979) went gold in Canada.

At the time, songs like "Mama Let Him Play" had music critics tapping Doucette to be the next major rock guitar hero, while later analysis had it that this possibility was derailed by both the rise in popularity of New Wave music and Mushroom's financial woes. In the 1990's Doucette was able to reclaim the rights to Mama Let Him Play, and it was re-issued in 1995 by Reluctant Records.
