I REALLY LOVE YOUR...
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

There's certainly no shortage of cover tunes in Girlschool's back catalogue. Gun's "Race With the Devil". ZZ Top's "Tush". The Rolling Stones' "Live With Me". "20th Century Boy" by T Rex. "Burning In the Heat" by Slade. "Do You Love Me" by Kiss. Gary Glitter's "Leader Of the Gang". The Sweet's "Fox On the Run". As a matter of fact, seven of the band's ten studio albums include a cover song. Only the three most recent studio albums don't have one.

Today's riff is from their cover of Mud's "Tiger Feet". It's not a riff, actually, it's a ten bar instrumental section that's played twice during the song.

You can hear that guitar part in the sound clip on this page:

STILL LEARNING
Topic: Website

When I started my website back in January, I didn't know anything at all about HTML. I gave myself a two-night crash course from a site on the web, then built the page. Now, months later, I've improved, the page has become a site, and I know next to nothing about HTML rather than nothing at all. Wink

No, actually I've learned quite a bit over the last several months. Having tried out doing a few tables now, I'm getting the hang of it, so over the last couple of days I've done one thing I would like to have done right from the start. It required knowing how to do tables.

I overhauled the Girlschool tab page, putting the song title links in a list beside the album covers rather than underneath them. This way everything isn't running just in a column right down the middle of the page. I wanted to have the titles beside the images right from the beginning, but I didn't know how to do it.

I went on to do the same thing with the rest of the page, as well, setting up the Links section by tables. It allowed me to get rid of all my "cheats" on that page. Not knowing how to space things initially, I'd just do it by separating things (two images, for example) with a dotted line, then coding the line to be the same colour as the page background so that it didn't show on the page. Not exactly correct HTML, but effective enough! (And no, if you're wondering, I don't use that same method to put subliminal messages on my pages, as I hear some sites do. You're welcome to highlight the pages or look at the source coding and check for yourself.  Smile)

This is what the re-vamped Girlschool Tabs page looks like. It looks a lot the same, but, as mentioned, the song titles have been moved up beside the album covers.

LONG WEEKEND
Topic: General

The long weekend is here, both here in Canada and in the US. Does Mexico have a long weekend this weekend? I think they should. Shut the whole continent down for a few days! Hey, why not? Hang a sign saying, "North America will re-open in 3 days. Please call again". Smile

So to all of you Canadian blog readers and site visitors, have a great Thanksgiving Day weekend! Have a good time and eat lots of turkey! (or veggies, if you don't eat turkey)

And also a very Happy Columbus Day weekend to all of you American blog page/website visitors!

On this Thanksgiving Day weekend, I'm thankful for (among many other things) all of you who visit this website and blog, and make them worth doing.

Take care, if you're travelling, and have a great long weekend, everybody! Laughing

ADJUSTMENTS
Topic: Website

I might need to make some adjustments to the tab most recently posted on the site. ("Hey Operator" by Coney Hatch)

It's not a big change, mostly a timing adjustment in the Chorus and in the Intro. I think that D5 chord at the beginning of each line maybe anticipates the beat rather than coming in on the downbeat. So I might have to move it just left of the bar line. And I think it has a couple of lead-in notes on the bass strings that I missed.

I'll have to give it a closer listen to see what adjustments might be needed, but I probably won't get to it until tomorrow.

I'll update this post in a day or two either to confirm that the changes were made, or that they weren't needed...whichever it turns out to be.

Does this larger font work better for people? Anyone? How 'bout you bots, can you read this better? Wink

I think it makes things a little more reader friendly.

Update: (Oct. 6) The adjustments have been made to the Coney Hatch tab, and the final tab is posted.

CONCRETE BLONDE
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

For my money, Johnette Napolitano is one of the best pop/rock vocalists of the past couple of decades. Rich voice, full of character. And James Mankey is one of those rare guitarists who has a sound and style uniquely his own, immediately recognizable. I like his playing a lot. Both were vital to the Concrete Blonde sound.

Bits of this guitar part (measures 2 & 4) are a bit tricky at first (at least they were for me).

IF YOU'RE SO INCLINED
Topic: Website

I submitted the site to a couple of other tab site listings today. One of those sites, Top 100 Tabs, has already accepted me and sent linking instructions.

Sites included on these lists have two stats given beside them: hits in and hits out. "Hits in" are the number of people who visit Top 100 Tabs by using the link placed on the listed site. "Hits out" are the number of people who visit the listed site from its link on Top 100 Tabs. Sites are ranked by the number of hits in.

If anyone is so inclined to help my site out a bit, all you'd have to do is click on the Top 100 Tabs link on the AGTA home page sometime (it's the flashing one that says CLICK HERE!, you can't miss it) and have a visit to Top 100 Tabs. You might even find some other tab sites you like!

I'm not really concerned with trying to move up the listings too much on that site. A number of the other sites there are really large tab sites that are naturally going to give them lots more hits in than my site ever could. I just kind of would like to put my site on the map on that site, showing that they can (hopefully) get a few hits in to their site from mine. So if anyone visits their site through that link, thanks, I appreciate it! Smile

(Also, in regard to hits in, these kinds of sites will register a hit from a given IP address only once per day. I guess sites that rank other sites by hits in have to have various failsafes to prevent abuse of their system. It makes sense. This particular site even lists abusers.)

Last I checked AGTA was listed at #27 near the top of the second page. (But I'm not sure how it got up that high! 1 hit in and 1 hit out were both me, testing the links. There was one other hit out.)

"CHEEKY" FELINE
Mood:  cheeky
Topic: Guitar

When I do some tabbing, I generally set up with my guitar, a pencil and tab paper, my CD remote to my right, and I take a guitar pick off of a side table to the left. Then I tab away. Sometimes, when I pick up the remote to reverse, pause, or un-pause, rather than put the pick down I'll just tuck it in the corner of my mouth for a second, then grab it when I need it again.

The other day I guess I was looking at just the right time to see one of my cats marching around on the side table, then sitting down right on top of the guitar pick currently in use, and looking at me like 'look where I am!'. I was just glad I saw her there so I at least knew about it! Tongue out I immediately thought...Note to self: Remember to retire that guitar pick right away before you stick it in the corner of your mouth without thinking next time you're working on a tab!

Somebody said to me, "You should get some really good 'bottom' notes from that pick now." Wink  (groannnn)

But I wonder how many other times she sat on it that I didn't see! Undecided

(That's not my cat in the picture.)
