As with any breed, it helps to be knowledgeable about the breed. Below are a few must reads for any new basset hound owner.

The Basset Hound Owner's Guide, published by the Basset Hound Club of America, is the best introductory reference we've seen in over two decades. The text includes a brief history of the breed, some special considerations in care and feeding, advice about finding the right basset hound, a copy of the breed standard, and other useful information written especially for the basset hound. We recommend it highly and enthusiastically for anyone who has or plans to acquire a basset hound.

Well written and well organized, its easy-to-follow format facilitates effective learning. It is well worth eighteen dollars. (And for those who like to formalize things a bit, there's a test at the end which can be taken and mailed in to receive a certificate of completion.)

This book is part of the "Basset Hound University", a practical education concept developed by the Basset Hound Club of America to provide home study programs in basset hound breed education. For young children, there is a Coloring and Activities Book which will help young children learn about the long-eared member of the family.

The emphasis of this book is a historical record of the best basset bloodlines in the US and offers wonderful photos of top bassets. An excellent reference tool for anyone who really wants to know what bassets are Supposed to look like (not those pathetic examples in most calendars you buy at Borders). If you own a basset...check your pedigrees...if you have a well bred dog, there will be names in this book you'll recognize.

This magazine is for general information about basset hounds. It's full of useful everyday information and is loaded with pictures sent in by proud basset hound owners. You can inquire about a subscription by contacting Riche Churchill at (931) 686-2012 or you can email her at buglr@infoave.net.

This publication is only available to members of the Basset Hound Club of America. It contains information about bassets that are currently being shown. There are always articles in the Tally-Ho that any basset hound person would enjoy.
