Odin, the son of Bor and Bestla, who he accepted as his foster son in
Bor's absence.
During the ancient feuds between the Aesir and the Vanir, Mimir and
Odin's brothers, Ve and Vili, tried to arbitrate a truce with the Vanir,
enemies of the Aesir, but the Vanir were displeased with Hoenir (Vili)
for being dim-witted and beheaded Mimir, sending his head back to Odin,
the chieftain of the Aesir. Preserving it in a well with magic, Odin
consulted with Mimir's spirit for wisdom for millennia afterward,
eventually sacrificing an eye to it and afterward merging the Aesir and
the Vanir into the Asgardians. |
