Maxalt - how with it.

Maxalt: uses Maxalt is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain and other symptoms of migraines, including sensitivity to light/sound, nausea, and vomiting. Prompt treatment allows we to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. Maxalt doesn't prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a headache.

Maxalt belongs to a group of drugs called triptans. It affects a certain natural chemical ( serotonin ) that constricts blood vessels in brain. It may also block other pain pathways in brain.

Maxalt: how to use Read Patient Information Leaflet available from your pharmacist before you start using Maxalt and each time we get a refill. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if we have any questions.

Take Maxalt by mouth at first sign of a migraine, or as directed by your doctor. It may be taken with or without food, although faster relief may occur while use Maxalt when it's taken on an empty stomach. Don't take Maxalt to prevent a migraine. If there is no improvement in your symptoms, don't take any more doses of Maxalt before talking to your doctor.

If your symptoms are only partly relieved, or if your headache comes back, we may take a second dose after 2 hours or as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than 30 milligrams ( 3 doses ) in a 24-hour period. If we also take propranolol, don't take more than 15 milligrams of Maxalt in a 24-hour period. For the Canadian product: according to drug manufacturer, don't exceed 20 mg in a 24 hour period.

If we have never taken Maxalt before and we have risk factors for heart disease ( see Precautions ) , we may be advised to take your first dose in your doctor's office in order to monitor for rare but serious heart problems ( e. g. , heart attack ) .

Your dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Tell your doctor if your condition doesn't improve or if it worsens.

Maxalt: side effects Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, numbness/tingling/prickling sensations, redness ( flushing ) , tiredness/weakness may occur while use Maxalt. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed Maxalt because he or she has judged that benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using Maxalt don't have serious side effects.

Chest/jaw/neck tightness can commonly occur shortly after using Maxalt. Only rarely are these signs of a serious condition. However, we mayn't be able to tell this apart from a serious reaction related to a lack of blood flow to heart, brain or other parts of body. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these unlikely but very serious ( rarely fatal ) side effects occur:

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:

Maxalt may rarely cause a very serious condition called serotonin syndrome. The risk increases when Maxalt is taken with certain other drugs such as other " triptans " used to treat migraine headaches ( e. g. , sumatriptan, zolmitriptan ) , certain antidepressants including SSRIs ( e. g. , citalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine ) and NSRIs ( e. g. , duloxetine, venlafaxine ) , or a certain drug to treat obesity ( sibutramine ) . Before taking Maxalt, tell your doctor if we take any of these medications. Serotonin syndrome may be more likely when we start or increase the dose of any of these medications. Seek immediate medical attention if we develop some of following symptoms:

In the unlikely event we have a serious allergic reaction to Maxalt, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include:

This isn't a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Maxalt: precautions See also How to Use section.

Before taking Maxalt, tell your doctor or pharmacist if we are allergic to it; or to other triptan migraine drugs; or if you have any other allergies.

Maxalt shouldn't be taken if you have certain medical conditions. Before using Maxalt, consult your doctor or pharmacist if we have a history of:

Before using Maxalt, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:

Tell your doctor if you have following risk factors for heart disease:

If we are at high risk for heart disease, your doctor may want to check your heart before prescribing Maxalt.

Maxalt may make we dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages.

Maxalt should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

It isn't known whether Maxalt passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Maxalt: interactions Your healthcare professionals ( e. g. , doctor or pharmacist ) may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring we for it. Don't start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.

Maxalt should not be taken with the following medication because very serious interactions may occur while use Maxalt:

Avoid taking MAO inhibitors ( e. g. , furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine ) for 2 weeks before, during, and after treatment with Maxalt. In some cases a serious, possibly fatal drug interaction may occur while use Maxalt.

If we are currently using any of these medications listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting Maxalt.

Before using Maxalt, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products we may use, especially of:

If we also take any ergotamine medication ( e. g. , dihydroergotamine or methysergide ) or any other " triptan " drugs ( e. g. , zolmitriptan, sumatriptan ) , we will need to separate your Maxalt dose from your dose of these other medications in order to lessen chance of serious side effects. Ask your doctor how long you should wait between your doses of these drugs.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if we also take drugs that cause drowsiness such as: certain antihistamines ( e. g. , diphenhydramine ) , anti-seizure drugs ( e. g. , carbamazepine ) , medicine for sleep or anxiety ( e. g. , alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem ) , muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers ( e. g. , codeine ) , psychiatric medicines ( e. g. , chlorpromazine, amitriptyline, risperidone, trazodone ) .

Check the labels on all your medicines ( e. g. , cough-and-cold products ) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products.

This document does not contain all possible interactions. Therefore, before using Maxalt, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all products we use. Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share list with your doctor and pharmacist.

Maxalt: overdose If overdose of Maxalt is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly.

Maxalt: notes Take Maxalt only as needed when a migraine occurs, as directed by your doctor. Maxalt should not be taken on a regular schedule. Never increase your dose of Maxalt or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Certain foods/beverages or food additives ( e. g. , red wine, cheese, chocolate, monosodium glutamate ) as well as some lifestyle patterns ( e. g. , irregular eating/sleeping habits, stress ) may bring about a migraine headache. Avoiding these " triggers " may help decrease frequency of migraine headaches. Consult your doctor for more details.

Don't share Maxalt with others.

A new study led by Emory University School of Medicine researcher Charles L. Raison, MD, is the first to show that depression and anxiety are more prevalent in Tibetan refugees than they're in ethnic Tibetans born and raised in comparative stability of exile communities in Northern India and Nepal. The study findings were reported in April 2008, on-line version of journal Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology.

" As political tensions within Tibet continue to erupt, it is estimated that approximately 2, 500 Tibetan refugees per year cross Himalayas into Nepal, seeking asylum there or in India, " explains Raison, an assistant professor in Emory's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

" One-third of these refugees are children and ninety percent of those children are without parents. Not only have these children been victimized in an environment lacking in respect for human rights, but their escape from Tibet to India through perilous Himalayas is full of risk and trauma. "

The study was conducted in Indian State of Himachal Pradesh at both Upper Dharamsala and Bir campuses of Tibetan Children's Villages ( TCV ) . TCV serves as the primary school system for ethnic Tibetans in exile in India and Nepal.

The Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 ( HSCL-25 ) , a questionnaire widely used to measure depression and anxiety symptoms in refugee groups around the world, was completed by 319 student volunteers in grades 9 through 12 and by older students in grades 7 and 8. The students also were asked to provide demographic information such as place of birth, age and availability of family support in India.

Students born in Tibet demonstrated significantly higher depression and anxiety scores than Tibetans born in exile in either India or Nepal. Students who left Tibet at an older age or who had been in India for a shorter period of time had higher depression and anxiety scores, suggesting that experiences in Tibet may have promoted depression and anxiety, whereas time spent in India may have promoted an improvement of symptoms.

Other risk factors for depression and anxiety in group as a whole included being female and having limited family contact; however, these factors didn't account for association between being born in Tibet and having increased anxiety and depression.

" It's very concerning that Tibetan refugees exhibited such significant depressive and anxiety symptoms, " says Raison. " Also worrisome is that we discovered even ethnic Tibetans born in exile had relatively high depressive and anxiety symptoms.

" These findings highlight the cost of the ongoing human rights crisis within Tibet in human emotional suffering. This is especially true for people born in Tibet who risk hardships of escape to freedom in India. But even Tibetans born and raised in exile appear to be paying an emotional price for loss of their homeland. "

Raison concludes that there's a need for continued support for refugee communities, even after prolonged periods of what seems to be successful adaptation in an exile environment. He suggests that providing increased international resources toward the improvement of emotional functioning for these adolescents and young adults could make a significant difference.
