Zomig? For what?

uses of Zomig Zomig is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain, and other symptoms of migraines, including nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light/sound. Prompt treatment allows you to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. Zomig does not prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a migraine.

Zomig belongs to a group of drugs called " triptans. " Migraines are thought to occur when certain blood vessels in the brain become swollen ( dilated ) . Zomig works by helping blood vessels in brain to return to normal size. It may also block pain signals in brain.

how to use of Zomig Read Patient Information Leaflet available from your pharmacist before we start using Zomig and each time we get a refill. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if we have any questions.

Your dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Take Zomig by mouth, with or without food, at the first sign of a migraine as directed by your doctor. If there's no improvement in your symptoms, do not take any more doses of Zomig before talking to your doctor. If your symptoms are only partly relieved, or if your headache comes back, we may take a second dose after 2 hours or as directed by your doctor. Don't take more than 10 milligrams in a 24-hour period.

If we have certain conditions that increase your risk of heart disease and we have never taken Zomig before, we may need to be monitored for rare but serious side effects ( e. g. , chest pain ) when we take first dose. Your doctor may ask we to take first dose in the office. See Precautions section for more information.

Tell your doctor if your condition doesn't improve or if it worsens.

side effects of Zomig Tingling/numbness, nausea, dry mouth, weakness, drowsiness, or dizziness may occur while use Zomig. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed Zomig because he or she has judged that benefit to we is greater than risk of side effects. Many people using Zomig don't have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:

Pain/pressure/tightness in chest/neck/jaw can occur shortly after using Zomig. These side effects are usually not serious. However, we mayn't be able to tell them apart from a rare but very serious reaction related to a lack of blood flow to the heart, brain, or other parts of the body. Therefore, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of these unlikely side effects:

Zomig may rarely cause a very serious condition called serotonin syndrome. The risk increases when Zomig is used with certain other drugs such as other " triptans " used to treat migraine headaches ( e. g. , sumatriptan, eletriptan ) , certain antidepressants including SSRIs ( e. g. , citalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine ) and NSRIs ( e. g. , duloxetine, venlafaxine ) , or a certain drug to treat obesity ( sibutramine ) . Before taking Zomig, tell your doctor if we take any of these medications. Serotonin syndrome may be more likely when you start or increase the dose of any of these medications. Seek immediate medical attention if we develop some of following symptoms:

A very serious allergic reaction to Zomig is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if we notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including:

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

precautions of Zomig See also How to Use section.

Before taking Zomig, tell your doctor or pharmacist if we are allergic to it; or to other " triptan " migraine drugs; or if you have any other allergies.

Zomig shouldn't be used if we have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if we have:

Before using Zomig, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:

Before using Zomig, tell your doctor or pharmacist if we have any condition that increases your risk of heart disease, including:

If we are at high risk for heart disease, your doctor may want to check your heart before prescribing Zomig.

Zomig may make you dizzy or drowsy. Use caution while driving, using machinery, or doing any other activity that requires alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages.

During pregnancy, Zomig should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

It isn't known whether Zomig passes into breast milk. Because of the possible harm to nursing infant, breast-feeding while using Zomig isn't recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

interactions of Zomig See also Side Effects section.

Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring we for them. Don't start, stop, or change dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Zomig shouldn't be used with following medications because very serious interactions may occur while use Zomig:

Don't take MAO inhibitors ( e. g. , furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, tranylcypromine ) for at least 2 weeks before or after taking this drug.

Zomig shouldn't be used within 24 hours of following medication because very serious interactions may occur:

If we are currently using any of the above medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting Zomig.

Before using Zomig, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products we may use, especially of:

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if we also take drugs that cause drowsiness such as: certain antihistamines ( e. g. , diphenhydramine ) , anti-seizure drugs ( e. g. , carbamazepine ) , medicine for sleep or anxiety ( e. g. , alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem ) , muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers ( e. g. , codeine ) , psychiatric medicines ( e. g. , chlorpromazine, risperidone, amitriptyline, trazodone ) .

Check labels on all your medicines ( e. g. , cough-and-cold products ) because they may contain ingredients that cause drowsiness. Ask your pharmacist about using those products safely.

Cimetidine is a nonprescription drug that is commonly used to treat extra stomach acid. Because it may interact with Zomig, ask your pharmacist about other products to treat stomach acid.

This document does not contain all possible interactions. Therefore, before using Zomig, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the products we use. Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share list with your doctor and pharmacist.

Researchers in the US investigating the effect of nerve messenger and mood regulator serotonin on energy metabolism of worms, found that being obese or thin may not just be a result of one's eating habits.

The discovery was work of Dr Kaveh Ashrafi, of Department of Physiology and UCSF Diabetes Center at University of California, San Francisco ( UCSF ) , and colleagues, and is published in 4th June issue of Cell Metabolism .

Scientists already knew that serotonin played a role in fat loss in both in the worm C. elegans and in mammals, with high levels of brain chemical leading to fat loss and low levels leading to fat accumulation. However, there are differences, for example when serotonin is high, they may both lose fat, but in the case of worms they also eat more, and in case of humans, they eat less.

In this experiment researchers think they found answer to this difference in that serotonin acts in two independent molecular pathways: one controls fat levels and other controls feeding behaviour. They wrote that:

" Serotonergic feeding regulation is mediated by receptors whose functions are not required for fat regulation. '

Ashrafi, who is Jack and DeLoris Lange Assistant Professor of Systems Physiology at UCSF, and colleagues discovered that fat regulation depends on a neuron channel working with a G protein-coupled receptor that starts a signal cascade that encourages breakdown of lipids ( fat molecules ) at peripheral sites of fat storage. The breakdown of lipids creates intermediate chemicals in the periphery that affects feeding behaviour.

Ashrafi explained that:

" It says that the nervous system is a key regulator coordinating all energy-related processes through distinct molecular pathways. '

" The nervous system makes a decision about its state leading to effects on behavior, reproduction, growth and metabolism. These outputs are related, but they're not consequences of each other. '

" It is not that feeding isn't important, but the neural control of fat is distinct from feeding, " said Ashrafi.

C elegans worms directly match their feeding rates to availability of nutrients around them; when resources are low, they build up fat reserves, and when they are plentiful, they shed them. Thus, their perception of food availability controls their metabolic state, with conservation of energy being predominant state during scarcity so that nutrients are directed to fat storage.

However, although worms and humans differ in their response to high and low serotonin, Ashrafi and colleagues speculated " that human counterparts of feeding-independent fat regulatory genes identified in our study may similarly regulate energy balance'.

Speculating on clinical implications of their findings, if results on C elegans can be extrapolated to humans, it could lead to therapies that manipulate fat metabolism independently of what a person eats, said the researchers.

At moment, therapies focus on feeding behaviour, which is important, but " it is only part of the story', explained Ashrafi:

" If logic of system is conserved across species, a strategy that focuses solely on behavior can only go so far. '

" It may be one reason diets fail, " he said.
