19 inch SLi Laptop.
Pro-Star recently took the wraps off of it's ultra high end 5988 model laptop...and MAN! what a beast it is. I saw this announcement and I was amazed. A 19 inch laptop with dual video cards! My mouth not only dropped but began to water as well.
With a 19 inch screen and a full size keyboard.. the 5988 is not really a "laptop" you'd want placed in your laptop for very long. I'd categorize it, as a desktop replacement and, clearly, not meant for frequent travelers.
But, who cares! The 5988 is one impressive laptop! It has a 64bit CPU and SLi graphics tied to a HUGE 19 inch LCD screen. This laptop is clearly aimed at gaming and any other graphic intensive task you can think of. 3D modeling, GIS applications, anyone?
Turns out that the Pro-Star 5988 is based on the industry leading Clevo computers design. Clevo computers is a Design Manufacturer that a lot of other Laptop makers use for parts and reference designs. Clevo recently released this design and Pro-Star was one of the first OEMs to seize the opportunity and design a new laptop based on it. If you've never heard of Clevo, just know that a lot of high end laptop manufacturers get their parts from them. Names like Alienware, ABS, Voodoo to name a few.
Now, all this technology comes at a price. And this is probably the worst thing about the 5988. The 5988 starts at $3,229.00 and goes up from there. Get it with 2 gigs of RAM, a 120GB HD and Windows XP Pro and you're looking at around $3,535.00. the upside is it comes packed with Bluetooth, wireless, webcam and gigabyte network card, not to mention all the bells and whistles like USB 2.0, firewire, memory card reader, etc. Not many people are in the market for such a high end laptop. BUT, it IS impressive and in a class by itself when it comes to size. So you have to expect to pay a lot for such a premium laptop.
For being a huge hunking super fast SLi laptop with a 19 inch screen, it truly deserves to be in everyone's running for Laptop of the year.
