RELEVANCE AND REALITY
Several times in Bernadine Dodge's provocative article, she argues that historians and archivists, although now relieved of their naive attachment to seeking absolute linear truth in the absolutely ambiguous terrain of 'the past,' are still capable of "telling the best stories that we can" (Dodge, p.364). It seems that for her, there are at least two criteria by which stories might judged 'best': their usefulness to the construction of contemporary person's subjectivities; and their closeness to 'truth.' That is, she is interested in telling stories that have both relevance and reality.
