The possibilities for casting projects are limitless. Heck, I even plan to cast some bases for the railing on my porch! They are aluminum and have deteriorated over the 30 years they have been outside. A couple have cracked and are no longer holding up the railing. Of course they are not made in that style any more, so what do you do? Make your own!
09/24/04 - Well, when you get older stuff can get pushed way back. This is what happened with my bigger furnace. It's been almost done for 6 months now and I have just gotten around to finishing it. I've cast a few trigger housings during the year but that's about it. Now I have a huge crucible (pot to melt in) and a furnace more than twice as big as what I've used in the past. It is curing now and will be ready for a melt at the end of next week. I can't wait to try a solid dummy receiver casting!
01/15/04 - Well finally I am just about ready to start melting and casting more than twice as much aluminum at a time. So now my projects can be a lot bigger than before. Soon I will be able to cast solid aluminum FG42 receivers and have metal left over!
1/2/04 - So far I have cast several parts for my dummy gun project. They have all turned out usable except one, the first receiver pattern I tried. It was probably okay but the second one I tried came out so much better it made the first one scrap. I think all together I've made: 3 trigger housings, left and right side trigger housing patterns, 2 good right side receiver patterns, and a selector pin.
Since all my gun work got me going, I've also started some car parts casting. So far I have successfully made a heater control block off plate for 1964 Fairlanes. Right now I'm working on making the pattern for a radio delete plate too.
