I started melting metal at the beginning of November 2003. In short order, I built the flowerpot furnace and fired it with charcoal, then after 4 days and 5 or 6 melts, moved on to propane! I've also started on the "2 bucks" furnace because my flowerpot furnace wasn't built to specs and it's not very efficient.
Sometime around the middle of the month, I received my order of Petrobond casting sand and tried my first casting, which turned out well for a first try. I've since cast several other parts and continue to learn more on each try.

to see the best casting site on the web! BackyardMetalCasting.com is where I learned the ropes. There's a forum, several how-to sections, and most important of all, 3 booklets on getting started. If you want to start this hobby, pry open your wallet and spend the small amount, it's worth every penny.
