In Mid-Victorian America, grief of the loss of a loved one was displayed by the clothing worn, as well as the mannerisms. Etiquette dictated that certain fashion rules were to be followed. American women followed these standards to the best of their ability depending on their financial status, social class, disposition and age.  The wearing of mourning attire was customary in paying tribute to and honoring the dead.
