But, after school Friday, Joey and I head off for Orlando. Joey drives, and I keep him awake by LOTS of conversation, which I don't let go to the "who-do-you-like" subject.
"Joey, I hope this works out for you." I say from the passanger seat, about half an hour away from Orlando. "I mean, this is like your dream come true."
"Yeah, but it means I'm going to have to leave you, if it all works out."
I sit there, trying to let that last comment sink in. I think to myself, "Did he mean that the way I took it?"
Joey glances at me from his seat, "Sam, did you hear me?"
"Yeah, I did."
"Did it offend you? I mean, I thought you knew I liked you as more than just a friend/sister, whatever."
"But..."
"Nevermind the 'buts'. Sam, I knew from that day in 6th grade when we were playing Truth or Dare, and you had to kiss me, that we were going to be something someday. Together."
My eyes get big. Joey likes me! Now, it takes a LOT of self-control to not kiss him.
"Joey... I...."
"You what?"
"I like you too."
"Really? I didn't think you did. I just thought that you thought we were just best friends."
I laugh, "I thought the same way about you."
"Whew, I feel better letting you know that."
"You know what, Joes?"
"What Sammy?"
"I feel better now too." I smile. "Great, cause, we're here. This is the address Chris gave me."
"Are you nervous?"
"Am I EVER! I mean, I have worse butterflies than at football tryouts."
"You'll do just fine Joes. Besides, if Chris thinks you're good enough for this job, I know you are."
"Thanks Sam." THEN, guess what? Joey leans over and kisses my lips softly. "I needed to hear that."
"Let's go Joey, I bet they are waiting for us."
"Yeah, let's go!" And Joey and I ring the front doorbell.
