SARGE (German Shepherd)
ABOUT THE DOG:
Sarge is a male purebred German Shepherd owned and handled by Walt Sikorski. Sarge was certified through the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA) in patrol and narcotics detection. Sarge specializes in evidence recovery and has also been trained in cadaver detection. When Sarge locates a piece of evidence, he give an identifiable response by laying down with the item between his front paws. Sarge is trained NOT to touch the item to preserve the integrity of the evidence.

whereas, K-9 Sargeant, a member of the Specialty Dog Unit (SDU) of Southeastern, Pennsylvania, is being recognized for the heroic service he has performed for numerous public safety agencies; and
Whereas, A German Shepherd, Sargeant is handled by Walter Sikorski, the Founder and Director of the SDU. He was certified through the North American Police Work Dog Association in patrol and narcotics detection. On September 17, 2001, Mr. Sikorski was contacted by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to assist in the recovery efforts of the World Trade Center in New York. He and Sargeant were assigned to the Canine Recovery Task Force at the Staten Island Recovery Site. During the two week period that they were assigned to the Canine Recovery Task Force, Sargeant was used for recovery, and he also worked as a therapy dog for the rescue workers and staff.
Now Therefore, the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania proudly recognizes K-9 Sargeant, a partner in the Specialty Dog Unit of Southeastern, Pennsylvania, for his brave and heroic actions which have led to the conclusion of numerous cases for different public safety agencies;
And directs that a copy of this document, sponsored by Senator Jim Gerlach and Senator Stewart J. Greenleaf, be transmitted to K-9 Sargeant, Specialty Dog Unit of Southeastern, Pennsylvania.
ABOUT THE HANDLER:
Walt, is the Founder and Director of the Specialty Dog Unit (S.D.U.).
Walt, is currently a deputy sheriff and a member of the Emergency Dog Alert Response System with Montgomery Co. PA. Walt's law enforcement career started in Connecticut in 1979. Walt, is a graduate of the Connecticut State Police Academy and completed the Pennsylvania Sheriffs Education and Training at Penn State Justice and Safety Institute in October of 2000. Walt served as a law enforcement officer in the State of Connecticut before moving to Colorado. While serving in law enforcement in Colorado, Walt worked extensively with Bill Butler from the International Mantrailing Bloodhound Network. Walt is a member of the International Mantrailing Bloodhound Network and Dogs Against Drugs/Dogs Against Crime DAD/DAC , The North American Police Work Dog Association, (NAPWDA),
The International Police Association and the National Association for Search and Rescue (NARSAR).
Throughout Walt's career he has received numerous awards and a congressional citation.
Walt enjoys doing demonstrations and educating the public about the special abilities of our four footed friends.
Walt has been involved in Search and Rescue since 1984.
