Recognize this? If you're a fairly big Beatles fan you ought to. It's 3 Savile Row, London. The "Apple" building where The Beatles had their headquarters in their last days together, and where they performed that famous last concert on the roof.
When I heard I was going to get to go to England I made up my mind that I had to get to at least one Beatles landmark. My uncle Bill agreed with me. So, in London at the hotel I searched a map of the city for a familiar street. I found Savile Row, and the next day uncle Bill, my cousin Tony, and myself set off to look for the Apple building. That was quite a day. We had a hell of a time getting to Savile Row, and then we had no idea where on the street we needed to go! We decided to just walk down the whole street and look. Uncle Bill & I were the experts, so we kept our eyes peeled. I saw one that looked eerily familiar, and uncle Bill said "That looks like it..." and I agreed that it did. Still, we kept going just in case we were wrong, and it was farther down. When we got to another street we figured we'd best go back to our original instinct, and hope it was the one. The more we looked at it, the more sure we were.
Standing there in front of that place, I could see George going down one of the sets of steps. I could see John and Yoko arriving and going down those steps as well. I looked up, and could imagine hearing the music of that last rooftop concert. I was 99% sure then. Like the desperate pilgrim that I was, I started to cry ;-) We took pictures, obviously, and uncle Bill took video. Then we left. That was it. I'll never forget it. I'll get back again someday too. Hmmm..."Get Back"...yup. Anyway, after that we went to Madame Tussaud's where I got to pose with the wax Beatles.
As soon as I got home I checked one of my Beatles books. Sure enough there was a picture of the building we'd seen, and the caption read: "3 Savile Row"
