The Knock Sensor is located on the lower intake manifold. The sensor listens for knocking and retards the timing to avoid engine damage. I did a little test on my car. I put in 87 octane gas and put the PE computer into low octane mode. I put the KS in the rear facing position in the manifold. I heard the car knocking but the timing didn't get pulled back very much if at all. Then I put the KS in the sideways facing position. The KS pulled out lot's of timing in this position but I heard no pinging. I then unplugged the sensor and had lots more power but heard the pinging. So all I can say is that the KS is not very good at optimizing power but it does protect your engine.
