Hal Sparks says he sleeps seven hours a night. We don't believe him.
How does the dynamic new host of E!'s Talk Soup bag that much sack time, considering his drive, his wide-ranging interests and his daily devotion to Jerry, Sally and Oprah?
Obviously, the diminutive 27-year-old Sparks doesn't lack for energy. Or talent.
The Kentucky-born comedic prodigy, who moved to Chicago as a teen, was named the Windy City's "Funniest Teenager" by a local paper. He studied with the storied Second City improv troupe before moving to Los Angeles in the late '80s.
Upon arriving in Hollywood, Sparks did stand-up in comedy clubs and coffeehouses by night, and chased down acting gigs by day. He earned small roles on such series as Lois & Clark and Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman--and a meaty part in the 1989 Billy Bob Thornton classic Chopper Chicks in Zombietown. ("I needed the money," he explains.) :-)
All the while, he found alternate routes for his creativity by writing scripts, playing music and tinkering in his basement full of video- and sound-editing equipment.
Now, Sparks brings his frenetic energy, along with his passion for loud guitar music, computer gear, kung fu, feng shui and hair-care products, to Talk Soup as the replacement for beloved Skunk Boy John Henson.
The network, and the world of talk shows, may never be the same.
