Tarot 201 Knights
Tarot 201 Queens

The Kings are the masters of their elements. They have gone through the apprentice stage (Pages), the gung-ho go-getter stage (Knights), they've internalized their specialty (Queens), now its time to externalize it and present it to the world.

The King of Cups is the master of the world of emotions. This is the Richard Gere of Pretty Woman. He knows what to say, how to say it, and when. This man can play the heart strings of any woman just like a violin. He also knows how to use emotion to get what he wants. This is the guy on the 'Save the Children' commercial. This is the Billy Graham- type person who can work an audience and have them up at the pulpit crying their eyes out, ready to commit to anything he wants them to. This man can also feel things very deeply. If you hurt this man, he may never get over it. On the other hand, if he loves you, you know you are loved with a deep, abiding love that nothing will shake. When this King shows up in a reading, look around you. What are you feeling intensely about? Has an emotional, possibly moody, person shown up in your life? Be careful to come up for air once in a while. Don't drown in all those emotions!

The King of Wands is a passionate guy who will sweep you off your feet with wine and roses. He knows how to romance women. The problem is, he may not hold on to them once he has them. He's always looking for the bigger, better deal. This guy is a political activist, an artist, or a race car driver. Whatever he does for a living, you can be sure, he's on fire about it. This is the master of the world of fire. He's creative, passionate, jealous. When this King shows up in a reading, take a look around you. What are you 'on fire' about? What do you feel passionate about? Is this another person, or an aspect of yourself? Be careful, when you play with fire, you may get burned. Don't burn yourself out too quick. Moderation is the key to a long and healthy life.

The King of Pentacles is King Midas. Everything this guy touches turns to gold, not just in the physical world, either. He has the ability to transform himself and the people around him to gold, too. He is the original alchemist. His taste is exquisite. His dress is immaculate. His car is elegant. He is a very down to earth kind of guy. When he romances someone, he takes her to the finest restaurants, the best operas. He doesn't do this to impress her. He takes her to the restaurant because they happen to have the best food in town. He doesn't care about the price. He cares about the quality. He is a very down to earth, practical person. But, don't piss him off. This guy will hold a grudge for years! He will track you down and he will get even, if it takes him 25 years to do it. When this King shows up in your reading, look at your life. What are you feeling 'stuck in a rut' about? Are you feeling like the Alchemist, or do you feel a need to transform some part of your life into gold? Is this another person, or do you think it's an aspect of yourself? Be careful not to get stuck in the mud. Having your feet on the ground is a good thing, but everybody needs to lighten up once in a while and stick their heads in the clouds, even if it's just for a breath of fresh air.

The King of Swords is the master of the world of communication. This is the fast talking salesman who can get you to buy a vacuum cleaner, even if you have no carpets! This is the guy who will seduce a woman and have her in bed before she even knows what hit her. And god help her if she falls in love with him. Like the wind, he will be gone the next day looking for his next conquest. This guy could talk the pope into buying a ticket to hell, and have him pay extra for the first class ticket with a smile. When this King shows up in a reading, ask yourself if there is something in your life that needs clarifying? Do you need to talk to someone about something? Are you hiding something that needs to come out? Is this another person or an aspect of yourself? Be careful about keeping your head in the clouds all the time. Sometimes you need to actually place your feet on the ground, once in a while. All those dreams and ideals are great, but if you never actually do anything about them, what good are they?

Like all the other court cards, the Kings do not necessarily have to be male. They have a 'masculine' feel to their energies, but I have met many women that I would classify as having King energy. In our society, the Man is supposed to be the one who masters his trade, while the 'Little Woman' stays home and cooks and cleans. The Queen's energy compliments the King. She internalizes, while he externalizes. She sees things as clearly as he does, and she has much the same characteristics as he does, but she is more subtle. She keeps her thoughts to herself. Her style is much more gentle. A Queen can represent a man as much as a King can represent a woman. Try to get a feel for the person's personality and try to touch their energy. Does it feel more introspective or more outgoing? Use that as a guide.
