Act upon insight into your action, " the moral we drew from the life of Jesus is the most reflective moral we have drawn. Act upon insight, " the phrase with which we have begun the statement of each moral has been our implicit definition of action as distinct from mere behavior. Insight into action means realizing the difference between action and behavior, seeing the failure of action as conquest, as taking what is not given, and seeing the possibilities of giving and receiving.
Let us consider now what it would be like to see all history as a story of behavior and what it would be like to see it as a story of action. :)
Suppose I do share with others the insights on which I am acting. Suppose I see myself doing this for the rest of my life. Am I to spend the rest of my life, " I may ask myself, "doing what I'm doing? " The thought may be somewhat appalling, Doing what I am doing would be a relationship with the world; giving my life to doing it would be a relationship with myself. Each relationship would have a story. What I am doing, allthough my whole life is spent in what im now doing, would make a story, and so would giving myself to it, allthough I continue to give myself to it and never abandon it. The appaling thing would be the prospect of a storyless life, a completely uneventful life. .....Sharing the insights on which one is acting widens one's scope by drawing others into concert with one's action, but it does not assure large scope as would acting in accord with the trend of behavior.
History as a story of behavior is a story of increasing numbers and increasingly uniform behavior. Trends become more and more massive and more and more evident. This gives rise to fears of deviating and desires to conformm and then to the desire for others to conform and the fears of those who deviate. Behavior becomes less and less random, not only by the sheer mathematics of inc reasing numbers but also because of the fears and desires which the rising mathematical unity causes. Meanwhile the possibility of controlling behavior by choosing among stimuli and responses leads to desires and fears. The desire to control and the fear of being controlled.
The round earth has no final horizon and the night sky is boundless, but mans journey in life comes to an end in death. Birth and death seem to mean that life does have bounds and final horizons. Mans experience during life of boundless deoths and changing horizons seems nevertheless to point beyond birth and death, beyond even the beginning and end of time of mankind.
It is as though time were an infinite sphere, its center everywhere,
its circumference nowhere.
The infinite sphere is a metaphor with a long history. Once it was a metaphor of God, an image of his presence everywhere and his absence nowhere. Then it becomes a metaphor of space, the image of an infinite universe in which the earth was no longer
the only center.
Now let it be a metaphor of time and of God in time. Let the past, the present, and the future be the dimensions of time. Let the moment be the center where past, present, and future meet. Every moment then is a center, even the moment of death.
The center is everywhere, the circumference nowhere.
