PINTRADER NEWSLETTER March, 2003 Vol II, No 3
We lost a good friend and trader just before the convention, Fran Pfeiffer from Westminster, Colorado. Fran always sat with me and wore white blouse and slacks with a blue vest. She was missed a lot. Our condolences to Fran’s family.

I am happy to report that Pete Peterson was at the convention healthy and looking good. We were glad to see you back Pete, stay healthy.

We had a great place for trading at the convention in Reno, just outside the vendors and registration area. Everyone passed us daily. We pin traders want to thank those in charge, they did a great job. As usual there was a lot of trading going on.

The hotels were spread out so we didn’t get to many of the hospitality rooms. There were other activities I think they were called slot machines. Larry found a great machine, he won every time he played. He put money in and got money back. They have this type in all of the casinos.

ALASKA HOSPITALITY:
John Markee and I made our annual trip to Alaska’s Hospitality Room and we took a couple of new traders with us. Bob and Vicki Rolewicz from Cicero-Berwyn got to enjoy Alaska’s hospitality and collected some pins for their children who are new traders.

ILLINOIS NEWS:
We want to welcome Heather and Jeremy Rolewicz to the world of pin traders. I personally want to thank all of the traders who were kind enough to help these two get started by giving and/or trading with Heather and Jeremy. They really enjoyed the trading and meeting new people and they’ll be back next year with more pins to trade. After the first night, Jeremy asked me if I knew any more people to trade with. I said yes and we found more the next day. You people are great. Isn’t this what Elkdom is all about, helping people? Thanks again.

Our state Crippled Children Charity had a beautiful pin added to the new set. It was an Elk with the American Flag. If you didn’t get one see Pete Matson in our booth in St. Louis. This year Illinois will celebrate it’s 100th Anniversary and it’s the 75th Anniversary for the Crippled Children Charity. Be sure to stop by our Illinois booth and check out all the memorabilia. Pete will have pins, ties and scarves. I just found out something interesting at the last convention in January. Our Elks ties have a design that represents the children as well as the Elks. If you have a tie, look at the design closely.

All of the East District sets we took were traded but there are still some sets available If you didn’t get a set and want one contact me at Pintrdr@aol.com

We have been waiting for five years now but it’s FINALLY happened. The Dolton Elks Lodge HAS BEEN SOLD. We closed down this week and we’re in the process of purchasing property and building a new lodge. We hope to be in our new lodge by September. More details later.

We’ll have a new pin for the Dolton Elks this year. Many people look for the shape of the state so that is what we did. See me at the convention.

STATE OF THE MONTH:
This month we’ll take a look at Utah. They have had two sets of Bees, one large and one small. The state president had bee hives and bees for each lodge.

There was a set of trains east bound and west bound. The state president had the shape of the state. I believe this was for the 1992 convention.

Utah had a set to honor Camp Wa’piti which were round pins for 1995 I think.

In 1997 they used the shape of the state that was very colorful and beautiful.

They had the Olympic set in 1998 showing all the sports in the Olympics, the state president used the shape of the state for his pin.

In 1999 there was a Seagull set, again with the shape of the state for the president.

A set of Elks (animals) were used for 2000, with the shape of the state for the president.

In 2002 there was an unusual set of Dinosaurs.

The number of pins in each set are determined from the number of lodges they have.

If I made any mistakes above here I apologize, I got this information from my personal pins and my memory.

I’m sure Utah has more sets but these are the ones I know about. If you have any corrections send them to me and I’ll pass them on.

If you would like to see your state in a newsletter, please send the information to me.

WISH LIST:
Norm Donovan – He is looking for a pin from each lodge in the country. If you are a reliable pin trader, Norm wants you to contact him at per2510@pacbell.net

Another trader has one request that I agree with. When you get emails, try to get back to them in a reasonable length of time. I will add to this, it would be helpful to put Elks or pin trading in the title. Some of us don’t open mail if we don’t recognize the sender or subject.

Tom Naumann is compiling a list of pin sets from California. We’ll pass them along as soon as it’s complete. This will help you know what to look for. I have heard that California trades pins at their state conventions like we do at the national conventions.

I am still trying to complete my two rooster sets from Rhode Island. I need the following: Blue set – 920 Pawtucket, 1860 Bristol Co., 1899 South Kingston, 2285 Coventry-West Greenwich and 2337 East Providence. White set – 920 Pawtucket, 1899 South Kingston and 2358 Smithfield. With the help from the pin traders, I was able to complete the Jewel set from New Jersey. I thank all of those who helped.

INTERNET: A new source for pins. If you have the time and a computer, check out Ebay for Elk pins. I have been getting older pins from the early 1900’s. The pins years ago were a lot bigger and most of them were two piece sets. Check it out.

NEWSLETTER: I have had people asking when is the newsletter coming out. Due to the sale of our Elks Lodge, we have been very busy since November which in part is why I took so long for the newsletter.
The other thing was information. I really need your input to have an interesting and helpful newsletter for you.

One more thing, I must say, we support our troops and hope they can complete their mission and return home safely. God bless America and our troops wherever they are.

Until next time, stay healthy, happy and we’ll see you in St. Louis.
