It
was an underdone Essendon side on paper Friday night but that wasn't the
case on the field. A spirited Bomber line-up combined beautifully to defeat
Hawthorn by an encouraging 53-points. It was a case of the old and the new
leading the Essendon charge. Mark Mercuri, Scott Lucas and Mark Johnson
were clearly the Bombers best and the engine room behind the important win.
It has unfortunately become the norm for the Bombers this season to head
into a match severely undermanned. There were many top Bombers players Watching
from the grandstand James Hird, Matthew Lloyd, Dustin Fletcher,
Adam Ramanauskas and Dean Rioli all missed with injury. But the young players
that were given the opportunity tonight clearly earned their spot. Ted Richards,
Jason Winderlich and Cory McGrath's form was promising.
Like ususal Essendon started slowly and it took them until the 16-minute
mark to score their first goal. Hawthorn jumped to an early lead kicking
the first two goals. Although the Bombers didn't convert on the scoreboard
until halfway through the quarter from the opening bounce the team played
with a high intensity and had a vicious attack on the footy. Paul Barnard
kicked the Bombers first goal and it was all one way traffic after this.
With the bombers ending up 53 point winners over the Hawks 15.16.106 to
8.5.53 |

Here
is a brief history of the Essendon Football Club. The Bombers are probably
the greatest club in the AFL. Along with Carlton, they have won 16 flags
and some of the greatest players in the history of the game like Albert
Thurgood, Dick Reynolds and John Coleman - to name just three, have represented
the red and black. The Bombers enjoyed a very successful era from 1946-1951
when they made the grand final every year and won three flags. Essendon
haven't been far off the mark since then and after 1981 have been one of
the most vibrant and popular clubs in the competition under the tough leadership
and brilliant marketing wisdom of coach Kevin Sheedy. The Bombers won the
2000 flag, losing just one match in the process. Essendon left Windy Hill
for the MCG in 1992 and recently have moved to Colonial Stadium (now Telstra
Dome) for home games in 2000. The Essendon Football Club Hall of Fame was
officially opened on Wednesday 19th June 1996 by Dick Reynolds. A dinner
was held on 22nd June 1996 to induct the first 15 members of the Hall of
Fame. They were: Bill Busbridge, Jack Clarke, John Coleman, Bill Cookson,
Terry Daniher, Tom Fitzmaurice, Ken Fraser, Allan Hird, Bill Hutchison,
Simon Madden, Alex McCracken, Frank Reid, Dick Reynolds, Albert Thurgood,
and Tim Watson. These past players, coaches and administrators were chosen
by a special committeee chaired by Ron Evans, and consisting of Brian Donohoe,
Bill Brittingham, Michael Maplestone and Simon Madden. The Hall of Fame
amazingly contains over 3000
exhibits plus interactive displays. The memorabilia dates from right back
to the very start of the club to modern day. The Hall of Fame was opened
to the public on Tuesday 25th June 1996. |
