A Firefighters Farewell
Kevin's Funeral
October 3, 1996
For roughly three hours Thursday, October 3, 1996, life in Herrin, Illinois seemed to stand still. The cities main street was closed to traffic for about 3 blocks. Hundreds of people stood outside on the street near the funeral home, but none of them spoke. Even the birds had ceased in their singing to pay homage.
Hundreds of emergency service workers stood three or four rows deep along nearly a two-block stretch of the cities main street. A minister's voice could be heard through speakers set up outside the VanNatta Funeral Home. The minister spoke of Kevin's love of firefighting, being an EMT, and a great runner. He spoke of his love and dedication for his family, including his parents, two sisters, his five children, and his wife who was pregnant at the time of his death. He read a eulogy on behalf of the Herrin Fire Department and the Fireman's Prayer. This was followed by the traditional bell service and a bagpiper's rendition of "Amazing Grace". Kevin's casket was placed on Herrin Fire Engine #812 and taken to the city cemetery.
An arch was formed by two snorkel trucks. An American flag was draped from the ladders. The long procession passed through the arches. At the cemetery, Kevin's wife was presented with a flag and his father was presented with a fire helmet signed by the entire department.
Things aren't the same now and they never will be. But we will go on and live our lives the best that we can. Not a day will go by that we will not think of him, his love for his family and his children, his dedication to his friends and his fellow firefighters, his wonderful sense of humor, and his bright, shining smile.
