Place of origin: originally India and Asia, but now also grows wild throughout the mediterranean area.
- this oil is a light greenish-yellow in colour with a light refreshing odour redolent of thyme, peppermint and licorice.
Method of extraction: distillation of the leaves

Effects on the mind:
- one of the best tonics for the nerves.
- second only to rosemary in its clarifying effect on the brain.
- also possesses uplifting, strengthening and restorative properties.
- it is particularly valuable in treating people suffering from anxiety,depression or hysteria.
Effects on the body:
- due to its antispasmodic properties, basil is effective in treating digestive problems; relieving painful/difficult digestion.
- these problems can be eased by massage of the abdominal area (always in a clockwise direction)
* as a massage oil, basil is best used in conjunction with other oils to make a synergistic blend.
- as it has a strong affinity for the respiratory tract, basil is useful in treating asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and whooping cough.
* one of the most effective ways to use basil in these instances is via steam inhalation.
