CO-DIRECTOR'S REPORT

By Jeffrey Nichols, MD

Medical Director, Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation
Chief of Geriatrics, Cabrini Medical Center

The Fan Fox and Leslie R Samuels Foundation has been the major financial supporter of the New York City Long-Term Care Ethics Network since its inception. The Foundation recently extended its generosity with an offer to provide a matching grant for our basic operations. These are the monies which keep the telephones on and the copy machine humming, support the newsletter and our part-time staff. The Foundation has challenged us to find new funding sources, whose contributions will be matched dollar for dollar. We are delighted to report that our first new "angel" has appeared, bearing a $15,000 grant from The Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation. We have already reached out to several other foundations which have funded programs in medical ethics in the past, but continue to search for potential new sponsors. Any reader with a suggestion or connection or checkbook is urged to call the Ethics Network.

The New York State Department of Health has asked the New York City Long- Term Care Ethics Network to become a member of the Partnership to Improve End-of-Life Care. We will be sending a representative to Partnership meetings. This invitation, clearly a mark of respect for the Ethics Network and its achievements, will give us the opportunity to have impact on a statewide level. The Network's subcommittee on Palliative Care in Long-Term Care has continued to meet. We anticipate another conference on a topic in this area in the year 2000.

Are you interested in becoming more involved with the NYCLTCEN? We have several available openings for new Board members. Board participation involves relatively few meetings--usually only three per year--but requires members to be involved in the development and planning of our conferences or the newsletter. Besides the immense glory, there is the possibility of working for an important cause with some very nice associates. If you think you might be interested, please call the Network (718-796-2444) and leave a message, or speak directly to Dr. Paulette Sansone or to me. We are particularly looking for more involvement of nurses, but any area of knowledge coupled with a willingness to work would be welcome.
