Palliative Care Task Force

The Palliative Care Task Force of the NYCLTCEN was formed in November, 1998 as a result of interest generated at our June conference on palliative care.

The following preliminary mission statement for the task force has been drafted:

As a sub-committee of the New York City Long-Term Care Ethics Network, the Palliative Care Task Force is an interdisciplinary group comprised of long-term care facilities and others, whose purpose is to examine and define the palliative care needs of long-term care recipients, with the goals of educating the long-term care community on appropriate standards or practice.

The task force is working to identify palliative care needs in a long-term care setting and to attempt to delineate the ways in which palliative care is either the same or different from palliative care delivered in the acute care setting. In order to accomplish these goals, the task force has agreed to spend the next several months educating itself on palliative care models which already exist in acute care, learn about current practices in long-term care and identify possible funding sources interested in assisting us develop "pilot projects."

At our last meeting Dr. Debora Sherman of New York University, Division of Nursing gave an excellent presentation an the current integration of palliative care throughout our health care system.

Paul Brenner of the Jacob Perlow Hospice and Ellen Bartoldus of Wartburg Lutheran Home for the Aging co-chair the task force. Members include representatives from Brandywine Nursing Home, Isabella Geriatric Center, Morningside House, Frances Schervier Home and Hospital, Cabrini Nursing Home, Jewish Home and Hospital, College of New Rochelle, and Fordham University.

Anyone interested in further information may contact Susan Rosendahl at the Network (718-796-2444).
