P R O C L A M A T I O N

GLOBAL PEACE WALK DAY
June 2, 1997


WHEREAS, the Global Peace Walk seeks to unite the world in peace and is comprised of people from many different races and creeds gathering together to spread the message of "Global Peace Now!" to develop consciousness and promote knowledge; and

WHEREAS, Santa Barbara's Peace Walk will start at the Douglas Family Preserve on May 31, and will carry the Santa Barbara Peace Pole for Jerusalem to UCSB where ceremonies will be held at the Tree of Peace near Storke Tower; and

WHEREAS, Santa Barbara is the first place to keep the Hiroshima Peace Flame (brought from Hiroshima, Japan) as an eternal flame; and

WHEREAS, Santa Barbara is also the home of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation; and

WHEREAS, in conjunction with this event, the Dalai Lama, champion teacher of nonviolence and prominent Nobel Peace Laureate, will be visiting Santa Barbara, June 2,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, HARRIET MILLER, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor do hereby proclaim the day of June 2, 1997, as

GLOBAL PEACE WALK DAY in the City of Santa Barbara and encourage all citizens to walk for world peace in our community and the world.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Official Seal of the City of Santa Barbara, California, to be affixed this 2nd day of June 1997.
