Present Day Yellowstone

Today, Yellowstone is still one of the most amazing places on earth. It became the first National Park (in 1872), and is visited by 2.5 million people every year. Aside from the stunning geysers, hot pools, canyons, and waterfalls, Yellowstone is home to many animals, including grizzly and black bear, moose, elk, mountain lion, buffalo, and eagles, just to name a few.

In 1988, more than one third of the park (793,880 acres) was destroyed by forest fires. Amazingly enough, very few of the animals in the park were killed. By the next summer, there were lodge pole pines sprouting everywhere and meadows full of wildflowers. Yellowstone is constantly growing and changing. Some scientists feel, due to small earthquakes and other activity, that Yellowstone is long overdue for another catastrophic event.
