LJUBLJANA, June 21 (Reuters) - Slovenia coach Srecko Katanec said his team would celebrate their fine European championship debut despite being eliminated on Wednesday.
Slovenia ended with two points after drawing 0-0 against Norway. They drew 3-3 with Yugoslavia in one of the games of the tournament and lost 2-1 against Spain in group C.
"We played an open game, scored four goals in three matches and could also have scored a goal or two today. We will celebrate although we are going home," Srecko Katanec said.
He said Slovenia were a better side than Norway and criticised Norway's physical style of play. "We were for sure a better side in this match despite a draw - they don't play."
But not all the Slovenian team were in party mood as they looked back on the 3-3 draw against 10-man Yugoslavia.
"I am disappointed. From now on I will support Yugoslavia, they offered us a chance to go through, but we did not use it," said midfielder Miran Pavlin.
SLOVENIA ; WOW!! What a shocker! Remember though, this team eliminated
Ukraine in the play-offs to get here. They have quality, but are softened by
inexperience. If only they could play 60 minute games in which no opponent
can be red-carded, that would do the trick! Co-tied with Portugal-England
for the best of the eight matches so far, this one was enthralling and
totally improbable from beginning to end. Clearly they were more shocked
than the cocky Yugoslavs when ahead 3-0, and their fall from grace was
precipitous and perplexing. They lacked the savvy to kill off the game, and
they were swamped when the tide began to turn. Amazingly they could have won
it at the death but an exhausted Milinovic headed wide of a gaping goal.
That miss may loom larger than the more obvious earlier collapse.

SLOVENIAN TV DINNER
Brodet
2 kg fish (various); 2 yellow onions, chopped; 2 tbs olive oil; 500 g peeled, chopped tomatoes; 1/2 cup dry white wine (Rebula, Malvazija or Tokaj); 1 heaped tbs chopped basil; 3 bay leaves; 1 tsp parsley, chopped; 1 lemon; plain flour; salt and pepper
Sprinkle the fish with salt and lemon juice. Marinate for at least 20 minutes. Heat the olive oil in a medium-sized pan, then dry the fish, dust it lightly with flour and fry until it is lightly golden. Remove from the oil and keep warm. Fry the onions until lightly browned, mixing constantly and de-glazing the pan. Add tomatoes and reduce the heat to low. Add wine, basil, bay leaves, rosemary, salt and pepper, cook until alcohol has evaporated - usually about six minutes. Place fried fish gently into the sauce, shake the pan (don't stir or the fish will disintegrate) and cook uncovered over a very low heat for 25-30 minutes. Sprinkle with parsley and serve. Do no re-heat.
