MUSIC : Secrets and Lies

It has always been my belief that music comes from the heart. For me, it can come from nowhere else. When music began, that's where it started, too. However, as time progresses, musicians - or those who call themselves such - are losing touch with this. Why? Money, Greed, Fame and Popularity.
Money and Greed go hand in hand. Where there is one, you are sure to find the other. Money has a lot of control in this world, and that is probably one of the most scary things I can think of. Politicians, Spiritual leaders, and good, honest, people have all fallen victim to the dangerous spell of greed. Music is no exception.
For most musicians, they begin humbly enough, making their music for enjoyment. They truly enjoy what they are doing, and put everything they have into it. However, their desires for fame and popularity often cloud their artistic vision. Music becomes simply a job. A way of making money and feeling important. When this begins to happen, my interest is lost. To me, when the only things people can think to write songs about are money, power, and their own corruption, they are not worth listening to. These are all things that we can see with our own eyes. Material objects mean nothing to me, and it's a sad thought when that's all some people care about.
Music should be more about expression than anything else. And in its true form, that's exactly what it is. I cannot understand how some people can call themselves musicians when they are unable to express themselves. They do not write their own music, lyrics, or even play instruments themselves. All they are, are puppets belonging to the hand of Manufactured Greed. Although these people may have a small glimmer of talent, I do not hold them in very high regards. If you took away all the background music and left them with only their voices, many of them would not survive. They have been processed so much by people "higher up" in the music industry that they themselves have virtually nothing to offer the music world.
If I find that a band or a musician plays/ performs music that comes from their heart, I'll happily listen to them. If they play their own instruments, or write songs, they deserve a chance. I'm not saying that I'll like them, but they deserve some respect and credit for not selling out. Selling out, for me, is a simple definition: When you stop doing things for yourself and do it for others in exchange for things such as money, popularity, or an image. Selling out is often feared by true musicians, but often they are later sucked into it anyway, sometimes without realizing it.
That's why you may find that some of what I consider to be good bands, you may not have heard of before. However, these are some of the people ~ the musicians ~ that I feel truly love music. They are doing what they do for themselves, and are trying in their own way to stay true to what they believe in. Image is nothing. Images fade. But the gift of music is something that no one should ever be able to take away from you. But, if you let them, then whatever happens is your fault.
So if you allow yourself to be brainwashed into the world of mainstream music - or what they try to sell as music - stop and think if you really like it. If you can listen to it, really listen, and remain just as happy with it as you thought you would be - good for you. Oftentimes, though, I can't do that. And that is the difference between you and me.
