The end of matinees mean the beginning of purse races! June 3rd marked the last of RUSROA’s scheduled matinee races. The Western Reserve Matinee Club c/o sponsored the RUS event. The full card of racing was held at the Wayne Co. Fairgrounds in Wooster, Oh.
Rider, Jamie Coffy, entertained the RUSROA members by driving in two harness racing events. She showed the versatility of RUS competitors by winning two harness classes, the 2:15 pace with Canvas Back Blue, and the Open Trot/Pace, with Sir Bo Bo.
The harness racing events where exciting, but the RUS event was the highlight of the evening. The spectators where full of questions for the riders, owners and trainers of these versatile horses.
Four riders went to the post, while the crowd watched in anticipation. Valiant Filly, ridden by owner/trainer, Donielle Pollack busted out of the gate taking an easy open length lead on the field. This Buddy’s For Me, with Sheleen Rodebaugh in the irons, settled in for a distant second. Parked, setting third on the outside was Dare To Cross, guided by Coffy. Setting comfortably on the rail in the fourth place position was Catherine Harris on Fat Man. To the half the field of four maintained their positions.
At the three-quarter pole Dare To Cross grew leg weary and gave up his outside position. Harris and Fat Man took advantage of this and moved up to take over the third place position. Growing anxious for the win, Harris and Fat Man went on to work on the second place spot. Harris, and Rodebaugh battled it out, and chased the leader. Down the stretch they came, gaining on Valiant Filly every step of the way. The two horses caught up to the leader at the wire but it was still Valiant Filly for the win, Fat Man nosed in for second, and This Buddy’s For Me, in a tight third place finish. A more distant fourth was Coffy, and Dare To Cross. All rider's where awarded RUSROA trophy T-shirts. The attractive T's featured RUS 2000, Western Reserve Matinee. This is how they finished:
1st- Pollack & Valiant Filly 2nd- Harris & Fat Man 3rd- Rodebaugh & This Buddy’s For Me 4th- Coffy & Dare To Cross
The mile went in 2:11. This marks Valiant Filly’s first season win and Pollack’s second win under saddle this season. She is a 7 yr. old bay mare out of Jj's Valiant Lady by Incredible Finale. Look out for the pair in this seasons racing action!
After the races came to a close, new rider Lori Culver. Took a test ride in a fully geared RUS mount. Dare To Cross, was to be the test mount. It looked as if she was a born RUS competitor. It was decided that she was both capable and very willing to race under saddle. Culver plans on riding in the RUS race at Goshen, NY.
RUSROA wishes to thank everyone who made this season's matinee's such a success. This season promises to be an exciting and eventful season of action packed racing.

Racing Under Saddle heats up
April 30th, saw Standardbred riders guiding their mounts around the track at the Painesville, Ohio, fairgrounds. The season opener RUS event was a four horse field, boasting 3 new horses and a new rider. This event was sponsored by White's Harness, of Painesville, OH. Bridgett Nappi aboard This Buddys For Me, Donielle Pollack astride Secret Menace, Catherine Harris on Timber Jack and Jamie Coffy astride Dare To Cross battled for the trophy cooler. This also marked Harris' first race as a rider. The 15-year-old Akron native has been working with Standardbreds in harness, and has enjoyed the challenge of preparing her mount for his first start under saddle.
As the field of horses moved in behind the gate the great pacer, Timber Jack, knew what he was there for. The fourteen year old campaigner put his nose on the gate and left with his usual fiercest with Harris, in the irons. This Buddy's For Me, and Nappi, settled in behind, Timber Jack. Secret Menace, guided by Pollack and Dare To Cross, with Coffy to complete the field. To the half of the race Secret Menace and Pollack pulled to the outside and passed This Buddy's For Me, with Dare To Cross following. And down the stretch the came, Secret Menace and Dare To Cross swooping by Timber Jack to race for the wire. It was Dare To Cross on the out side. Secret Menace was on the inside. But it was Secret Menace after it all and to the winners circle!
This was Menace's first start under saddle, a new mark of 2:22.3. Secret Menace is a 5 yr.. old, bay gelding by Die Laughing out of Ready Shoes. He is trained by Erik Hall of Mt. Vernon, OH. and owned by Reg Conklin & William Taylor of Ohio. He has a mark of 1:58.2 in the bike and is driven weekly at Northfield Park and Scioto by Tom Hall.
Despite the action packed 3/4 pole struggle for the lead, the field finished according to their post positions:
Pollack & Secret Menace in 2:22.3 Coffy & Dare To Cross in 2:22.4 Harris & Timber Jack in 2:23.3 Nappi & This Buddys For Me in 2:26.3
The second race at Painesville, Ohio, was an even greater event! On Sunday, May 14, seven horses filled the track with non stop action. Three new riders mounted up in hopes for a chance at the winners circle. The race was titled the Forest 'Pappy' Cone Memorial. From post position 1 was the 6 yr.. old horse, Revenge Time, who is trained by Deborah Stocker, and owned by Jerry V. Patriarca, of Painesville, OH. He was ridden by Constance Stocker. From post position 2 was the RUS campaigner, Themusciofthenight. He is a 10yr. old gelding by Bobwhite Hanover out of Imagine Me. He is owned by Earl G. & Deborah J. Stocker, of Thompson, OH. Maria Waters's was in the irons. In the 3 hole was Dare To Cross, a 6 yr.. old bay gelding by Dare You To, out of Easter Cross. He is owned, trained and ridden by Jamie Coffy. In the 4 hole was Timber Jack, a 14 yr. old bay gelding by Flying Bret, out of Direct Missile. He is owned, trained and ridden by Catherine Harris. From the 5 hole was This Buddys For Me, a 7 yr.. old roan gelding, out of No Vet Bill Please, by Labets Buddy. He is being purchased by Debbi Edwards, of Dover, OH. He was expertly guided by the first time rider, Sheleen Rodebaugh. In the 6 hole was Secret Menace, with Donielle Pollack. And from the 7 post position, completing the field, was Valiant Filly. She is a 7 yr. old bay mare out of Jj's Valiant Lady by Incredible Finale. She is trained by Donielle Pollack, and guided by Bridgett Nappi. The field spread out in the first turn. But it was a race to the pay off half when Rodebaugh, pulled This Buddys For Me from the fifth position on the rail to the outside of the field. Easily taking the front the pair settled in. Dare To Cross, and Coffy used them as cover to swoop by the the rest of the field. Nappi & Valiant Filly struggled to hold on for second. It looked like Rodebaugh was after it all, when Dare To Cross, finished with his usual finesse, winning by a bogger! Valiant Filly held third with a gamely effort.
This is how they finished in the mile of 2:12: 1st Coffy & Dare To Cross 2nd Rodebaugh & This Buddys For Me 3rd Nappi &Valiant Filly 4th Waters & Themusicofthenight 5th Stocker & Revenge Time 6th Pollack & Secret Menace 7th Harris & Timber Jack
May 21st, marked the last of the Painesville matinees. A four horse field post paraded and turned to the gate. This included a new comer to this seasons racing, Fat Man, rode by Jamie Coffy. To the top went Themusicofthenight and Maria Waters. Settling in behind Waters, was Revenge Time, with Constance Stocker in the irons. Further back was This Buddys For Me, with his rider Sheleen Rodebaugh, followed by Coffy and Fat Man. All in a row they went to the half. In the backstretch Rodebaugh, made a bold move pulling This Buddys For Me and urging him on. Working on the top, finally gaining clearance, Rodeabugh settled in. Coffy guided Fat Man, off the rail in search of the top, but Rodebaugh held a strong length lead. It was a battle for the second position between Themusicofthenight and Fat Man, but at the wire it was This Buddys For Me, with Themusicofthenight in second place, and Fat Man for the gamely third. Finishing fourth was Revenge Time and Stocker. The mile went in 2:16. Everyone is looking forward to the Wooster Matinee. The racing fever is catching and spreading like wildfire.
