Chapter 24
As you open the door, the phone rings in Devon’s parent’s room. You ignore the
fact that someone is calling and invite Isaac inside. Once he enters you grab onto his
hands and pull him closer to give him a hug. He lightly kisses you lips and you pull
away and give him a smile. You had forgotten just how much you missed Isaac.
“I don’t remember you being this beautiful,” Isaac tells you and lightly pecks your
lips once more.
Then you hear Devon give a scream, you quickly turn around and he is still holding
onto one of your hands.
“Here...... I am so sorry......” Devon says as she hands you the phone, with big
tears streaming down her face. Your heart drops and you suddenly don’t want to talk to
her.
“Hello? Mom? What?” You quickly ask her. You hear her let out a low sigh.
“It’s Kevin honey. He’s dead.” Your Mom’s voice chokes on the word ‘dead.’
“What? No! That can’t be! You are lieing to me!” You find yourself screaming
into the phone back at her and tightening the grip on Isaac’s hand. This was
impossible. Isaac sets his hands on your shoulders in an act to try and comfort
you.
“I am so sorry honey. There was nothing they could do. He killed himself. I’m
sorry honey.” Her voice shakes the whole time she tells you this. You could tell she
was crying, she had loved Kevin like he was her own son. You had loved Kevin as a
best friend.
“No... there is no way this happened! I just talked to him a little while ago. He was
happy. His voice wasn’t from someone that was getting ready to kill himself.” You start
to cry harder now and Devon’s Mom takes the phone from you. Isaac quickly takes you
in his arms and trys to comfort you as best he can. He wraps his arms around your
waist and lightly rocks you back and forth. You wrap your hands around him and lean
against his shoulder and sob.
“Isaac... he killed himself... ” you whisper to him, in between sobs.
“Shhhhh.......” he whispers back. He gently rocks you back and forth. Then you
realize that is was your ex-boyfriend that had died and here you are with your new
boyfriend. Something was definitely wrong with this picture. You push Isaac back
away from you. Devon comes over to give you a hug, but you push her away too. You
turn and walk out the door. Not knowing where you are going, just wanting to be left
alone.
You run down the hall to the elevator, but it is impossible to escape Isaac, he runs
much faster then you.
“Wait! Christina!” Isaac calls after you. It does no good. You keep on running.
You notice that he is following you. There is no way out. You make to the elevator.
But the door doesn’t close fast enough and you are face-to-face with him.
“Isaac... please... just leave me alone!” You shriek at him as you back yourself into
the corner the elevator.
“I can’t. I realize how hard this must be for you. I mean, being here with me when
you got the news. But please Christina, I am here for you.” He begs to you. The
elevator has reached the lobby level. As you walk out and round the corner, Isaac
grabs your wrist and you are then face-to-face with Devon’s parents.
“Please! Everyone! I need to be alone!” You find yourself screaming at the people
that care for you.
“We just want to help. Come on, let’s go and talk.” Devon says and she reaches
out for your hand.
“There isn’t anything to talk about. He’s gone. It’s my fault this happened! I
should have been there for him!” Isaac is still holding on your hand, and you haven’t let
go, you can’t for some reason.
“No honey, it’s not your fault,” Devon’s Mom tells you, trying to calm you down. “it
wasn’t anyone’s fault. Don’t blame yourself.”
“But it is......” you drift off as you are pulled back against Isaac’s chest. You give
up. There is no use fighting against the people that care for you. Mr. and Mrs. James
give Isaac a nod and he takes you into the lobby with the chairs and the two of you sit
on the couch. Devon and her parents go back up to their rooms.
Isaac has his arm wrapped around your shoulders. “Mrs. James thought I should
tell you about the arrangements with his family. They are having the viewing on
Monday and then they will have the funeral on Tuesday. Mr. James was planning on
leaving Tulsa early Saturday morning.”
“I don’t want to leave here. I will be going home to a nightmare.”
Isaac lightly kisses your forehead. “Kevin was your friend and boyfriend, you need
to be there. You will feel better if you are there and you know that he doesn’t have
anymore pain.” He wipes away a few tears that had started to trickle down your check.
“Don’t worry... I am here for you... if you need someone to talk to... or just a shoulder to
lean on.”
“Thanks,” you mutter to him. But this all seems like a horrible nightmare to you.
You begin to get a headache and you end drifting off into a light slumber.
