Chapter 19
"Hi, Kev? It's me. How are you?" You tell Kevin. It was almost like talking to a
brick wall, since it was by phone. You have just finished your little talk with Devon and
figured it would be good to get this done and out of the way.
"Oh hi. I am doing okay. I miss you a lot. How are you?" It breaks your heart to
hear that he misses you. But you knew it was going to happen and you must be bold
and tell him what's on your mind.
"Well, I am doing pretty well. What have you been doing this summer?" You ask
him. Being poliet. You usually jump into a telephone conversation by telling him how
much you miss him, even if he had just gotten home from your house.
"I have been working. I got myself a job up at Subway. The pay is pretty fair. I
figure in about eight months I will be able to get my car. What have you been up
to?”
"I haven't been up to much. We met some friends here. So we have been
hanging out with them. I did get hurt. It was only my ankle the first day we were here.
But it is better now. It was funny, you should have seen Devon, she was so...."
"....what's wrong?" Kevin finishes your sentence, but not with the words you were
going to use. He can tell by the tone of your voice that something is bothering
you.
"What do you mean 'what's wrong?'"
"I mean, you are acting kind of strange. You aren't usually this quiet and you don't
seem very happy to talk to me." You can hear the hurt in his voice.
"I'm happy to talk to you. But......"
"But what?" He asks you, suddenly he sounds very distant.
"Well..... you remember what we talked about when we left? About seeing other
people?"
"Yeah, why? You found someone new already and you suddenly forgot about me?"
The anger is coming out of his voice now. It starts to tear at your heart.
"Well, I did find someone. Please don't be mad at me Kevin. I still want our
friendship." Tears start to form on the brim of your eyes. All the memories of you and
Kevin together rush through your mind, and you question if it's the right thing to do.
You have been with him for so long and been through so many hard times.
"Yeah, sure. We’ll be friends." He says with sarcasm. "You know that won't
happen. It never does. Couples say that all the time. Look, I love you. ANd then you
sit there and dump me? Why? What did I do? Or what didn't I do? Tell me please. We
can work this out. I need you!" The reaction you have received has thrown you off
guard.
"Look Kevin," you tell him sobbing, "it was nothing you did or didn't do. And it was
nothing I did or didn't do. I just found someone that makes me happy. He gives me a
different feeling inside. I can't explain it. Don’t make this harder than what it is Kev,
please."
"Why? I don't understand. You are breaking my heart into a million pieces. Don’t
you see, I need you. I am nothing without you. Forget about him." Kevin is pleading
with you. There is nothing more you can say.
"Kevin, look, I'll be home in a few weeks. We can talk it over then. I can't handle
this now." You tell him feeling a little more calm then what you did before.
"No, we have to do this now. I won't be able to live knowing you're with some other
guy."
"But Kev, I need to go. We are getting ready to go. Now, please, don't do This. I
promise I will call you as soon as I get home."
"I love you." He whispers into the phone and hangs up. You slowly set the phone
down and sob.
