The Best Night
Colleen and Andrew were slowly dancing smiling at each other. Both could not believe they were married. Andrew leaned over and kissed Colleen. "I love you Andrew." Andrew smiled and whispered in her ear "I love you even more." Colleen laughed and squeezed Andrew's hand. Matthew walked over at that moment holding Katie. "Colleen dance with me," Katie cried. "You don't mind do you?" Colleen asked Andrew. "Not as long as you a dance for me later." "I'll think about it" Colleen said smiling. "Come here Miss Katie. "Matthew gladly handed over his little sister and him and Andrew walked off talking. "Did you get tired of dancing with Matthew?" "Yes, he wouldn't come out on the dance floor." "Well here is a secret; your brother can't dance." "I know." Colleen smiled at her little sister's last remark. At five years old she is so smart Colleen thought. Soon Sully asked to cut in and Dr. Mike took Katie from Colleen so she and Sully could dance. "You having fun?" Sully asked. "Of course I am. Is there a reason that I shouldn't be, Pa?" Sully smiled when Colleen called him Pa. "Not one I can think of." "Look, Ma is dancing with Andrew." "Guess Matthew is stuck with Katie again." Colleen saw something that relay upset her just than but she did not say anything. As the next song started Andrew and Sully switched partners and the second he put his arm around Colleen he knew something was wrong. "What's wrong Colleen?" Andrew asked looking at her. Colleen looked around for a minute and said, "You see that man talking to Matthew?" Matthew had given Katie to Brian and he had walked away holding the little girl. "Yeah. Matthew looks pretty made at him. Looks like he is ready to punch him." Andrew said joking. "Matthew would kill him," Colleen was dead serious, and Andrew knew it. "Colleen, who is he," Andrew asked getting worried. Colleen looked over to where Sully and Dr. Mike were dancing and then looked back to Andrew and said, "That's Ethan Cooper." ****************************************************************************** Andrew looked at the two men (or rather Matthew the man and Ethan the "man") "That's your father?" Andrew asked. "Did I say he was my father? NO I said 'that's Ethan Cooper'. Sully is the only Father I have ever had. SULLY IS MY FATHER!" Colleen said trying to keep her voice down. "O.k., o.k. I'm sorry. I know Sully is your father." The band finished playing and Sully spotted Ethan. "Michaela....." Dr. Mike saw Ethan and she and Sully started to walk over to him and Matthew as did Colleen and Andrew. ****************************************************************************** "What are doing here Ethan?" Sully asked him. Ethan paying no attention to Sully turned to Colleen "Colleen, my dear you look wonderful!" "Answer the question Ethan," Sully said not at all happy about him being here. "I got the wire you sent me and I would have been here sooner but you never gave me a date to come on." Ethan said to Colleen paying no attention to Sully. "Well Mr. Cooper, you should have taken that as a hint," Dr. Mike said coldly. "Ethan," Lillian said coming up behind Ethan. "Well I must say at least you didn't leave Lillian at home like you did Ma," said Matthew giving Ethan an icy look. "Matthew, I can't make up for the past with Charlotte, but I do want to make up the past with you children. I'm sorry for what I did." "You always say that, but ...." "You can never make up for what you did...Ever," Colleen said quietly, as Andrew slipped his arms around her waist. "If I had even thought for a moment you would show up I never would have sent that telegram. I'm shocked you came. But you are here, and as long as you don't start anything you may stay. This is a warring, the only one you get. You cause trouble and I'll have you put in jail. "You would put your own father in jail." "YOU ARE NOT MY FATHER," Colleen yelled. The band stopped playing and every one was looking at the Sully/Cooper/Quinn/ family. "My father is SULLY!" "Colleen please..." Andrew began "Andrew be quiet." Colleen snapped looking at him. Colleen turned back to face Ethan. "You are not my father, I can not believe you have the nerve to say that. Look at everything you have done to us. You left when Brian was a baby. Ma cried every night for almost a year. You came back AFTER she died. You came back and said you were going to take us with you. But you took the money for the new school, and than you just left again." "I left a note..." "Sully wrote that note." Matthew said. Colleen looked at Matthew. "You didn't even say good bye. You just up and left again. Than you come back with HER," Colleen said pointing to Lillian. "One day you sing the adoption papers and say we can stay with Dr. Mike and Sully than when you find out Lillian can't have children you wanted us back. And for what? A trust fund. A trust fund that was left to Lillian's children by her father." Colleen said close to tears. Andrew pulled her closer to him. "How did you know..." Ethan started. "I heard Sully tell Dr. Mike." Colleen said. "Than after Brian and I ran away only SULLY and DR. MIKE could find us. Than when we came back to town and I was sick anybody with half a brain could see that I need a doctor's care, but you wanted to take me home! I would have died. At lest Sully caught me before I fell to the ground and took me into the clinic." "I know I made mistakes. I am sorry for that." "That is not good enough." Colleen said. By this time she was crying. Only because Andrew was holding her was she able to continue. "You weren't there when I graduated from Colorado Seminary College. You weren't there when I graduated from The Woman's Medical College; took the Hippocratic Oath, and was pronounced a doctor, like a father should be. But that's ok. I could care less. My Father, my Pa was there. Sully was there. You weren't, so don't you dare call your-self my father." Colleen turned around and buried her face in Andrew's chest. Andrew took Colleen over to a chair and told her to sit down. He knelt down by her and kept saying, "It's ok. It's ok Colleen. ****************************************************************************** "Colleen just said everything I have wanted to for 16 years. You better leave." Matthew said trying to control his anger." "You are not going to hurt my daughter anymore. Leave!" Sully said calmly. " I will, but I'll be back." Ethan said giving Sully a cold look. "Come Lillian." Ethan addressed her like an animal. Ethan and Lillian left. ****************************************************************************** "You do know you are suppose to be happy today can't you smile." Andrew said "Come on sweetheart, please smile." Colleen asks though her tears and sobs, "What did you just call me." "Sweetheart. Do you mind?" Andrew asked her. "No, I like it. Colleen said smiling. "Well I got you to smile again." "You always get me to smile." Colleen said putting her hand to his cheek. "And I always will." Andrew stood up and asks, "May I have this dance." "Andrew the band is not even playing." "I'll fix that." Andrew and Colleen walked over to the dance floor and Andrew said, "This is a wedding let's have some music. The band started to play and Andrew and Colleen were the only two dancing. Dancing on their wedding day and loving it. Colleen thought to herself I am not going to let this ruin my wedding. And she didn't.
