Ajax of Salamis
Ajax the Greater, son of King Telamon, was the best fighter in the Greek army next to Achilles.
An old companion of Hercules, Ajax was slow witted and strong.
Ajax was one of the suitors that tried to marry Helen but failed. Bound by a oath, he went to Troy to regain Helen and to lay Troy to waste.
Known for his courage even in the face of a fearsome opponent, Ajax was the only greek besides Achilles to fight Hector and live. During the duel, each warrior held until Apollo’s curiosity disrupted the match by driving his sun chariot to close.
Upon Achilles’ death, he and Odysseus claimed the armor Hephaestus, the god of forge, had made. When the armor was awarded to Odysseus, Ajax slaughtered an entire flock of sheep before killing himself.
