1LT Spotswood deWitt
1942 - 1966

We quickly located several others by email and organized (under John Kaye's guidance) with former members of each battery searching for battery
members. I was able to get a copy of our first in-country personnel roster from the archives and we got things rolling. Almost simultaneously
John Kaye and Jeff Bell came up with the idea that we ought to name the new chapter for our first combat casualty. That sounded good to me.
We cleared the naming with the 4ID ASSN but decided that we should discuss it with the deWitt family before making it official. After some months
of email, phone, and mail searching, we located Sandy deWitt and, through him, Mrs. Catherine deWitt, Spot's mother. I called Mrs. deWitt, introduced
myself, and told her what we had in mind. She was quite pleased with the idea and I promised to visit her soon.
On July 25, 1999, Jeff Bell and I presented a Certificate of Honorary Membership in the Spotswood deWitt Chapter of the Fourth Infantry Division
Association to his mother, Mrs. Catherine deWitt. The family presented a handsome portrait of Spot as a Cadet at West Point to the Chapter. We
will always cherish the portrait and it will occupy a place of honor.
