Comments by Irving Smolens: I know and knew a number of the people in the picture. Vernon P. "Junie"
Burns was my battery commander on D-day. He was on the LCT that was
destroyed. Ed Green the Hq. Battery Commander (not in this picture) was an
eye witness to that tragedy and told me that he saw Junie attempting to pull
men out of the water. Lorton "Doc" Livingston became my new battery commander
until he was severely wounded in the jeep explosion that killed Duke Sanders
and Lt. Finnel. John Ausland was named my Battery Commander when we returned
to the States. I have met Bill Sydnor, Jack Cunningham and Hans Focks at
various reunions. Claude Mercer who died about a year ago was a close friend
of John Ausland and John, in his book, "Letters Home" recounts how Claude had
saved his life in Normandy.
Damico was chief of a gun section in B Battery. He may have been the chief of
all the gun sections. I believe he was a staff sergeant and all the other
section chiefs such as Peter Russo and Schwing were buck sergeants.
